Here's how it went down for me in '21 when ordering my M2c. If I were in the market for a G87 right now, I think I'd wait till allocations actually exists and avoid all the drama, lies, and horror stories about "lost" positions in line, etc.

I was ready to order the first week of February. Production was ending in June. Allocations were already scarce and required a few phone calls to lock down, and might not be in your home area. I checked with the largest M dealer in the western region, 3 hours away but near where I used to live and done business with them before. Picked a CA off the website, called her and asked if they had an M2c allocation. She had to check. Came back and said "we have one". I said "I'll be right over with my checkbook."

Sat down, spec'd the car, agreed on MSRP as sell price (they weren't willing to move an inch, not surprisingly), got prequalified for the 0.9% financing promotion that was in play at the time, scratched a deposit check and walked out with the build sheet, showing my production number and status 111. Boom, done. Ordered on Feb 4th, delivered on April 30th.

To those placing orders now - negotiate your price NOW and get it in writing! Don't let them play games when the car arrives. No ambiguity! If you want nothing besides the car as it comes from the factory, make sure and indicate that too so that they don't try to stick you with VIN etching, or anything else that you don't want added. Same applies obviously if you wait until you can walk in and get an allocation & production number on the spot, of course. Good luck!

Hopefully your CA gives you at least two calls prior to then. #1 to confirm your final specifications when your allocation arrives. #2 when you car is en route to the dealership. Obviously he/she will call once it hits the ground.

If I placed an order next year could I get the car/get my build allocated before production ends which is apparently later this decade? Not sure how long these waits can be. My first rodeo.

Definitely you will. Waits are about 1-1.5yrs depending on which dealer you're working with. The second part to this is, that is for cars which you order. Preconfigured M2's will be on dealer lots starting in April/May which may coincide with the exact, or close enough build you would choose anyway.

M2's will be available, just depends on your appetite for markups and/or slightly different configuration.

Good to know, thanks. Hopefully there is no markup, if there is I might be calling all dealers in my region or beyond until I find one at msrp.

Not sure how many M2s will be "sitting" on dealership's lots for sale. When I ordered my M240 last year, was none to be found on a lot in South Florida in the 6 month period from order to taking delivery (and was told same forthe M2s).

When I picked up my M240, I had two people asking if I wanted to sell it right then and there...

  • Not every dealership gets the same number of allocations.
  • The logistics of who gets the first deliveries is handled by BMW.
  • Having an allocation is not a guarantee of anything.
  • Salesmen 'typically' do whatever's in 'their' best interest.
  • You don't have an official order until you get an official production number and VIN.

Dealers still get to decide what cars they want. For instance, if BMW allocates 4 M2s to a dealer this month the dealership may decide to only get 2 or 3 cars and use the remaining slot/s for M3/4s instead because they may make more on the sale of those cars, already have a long backlog of customers that have been waiting for them or any other number of reasons.
The dealer doesn't decide how many M2s they get and can then magically make those allocations into something else like an M3/M4. That involves trading away those allocations to another dealer to get something else. The allocations (production slots) are specific to that car. They aren't fungible (except within that model--xDrive vs RWD)

No. An allocation is a production number, can't have one without the other.

An an allocation CAN be assigned to a customer IF BMW pulls the order from the order bank. Which is usually what happens. Say the dealer gets 2 allocations for a particular car, if there are order bank orders for that model, BMW pulls them from the order bank (first in/first out) and they are moved to status 111 (or 112 depending on timing) and have a production number with a customer assigned to it.

VIN assignment occurs at status 150.

The next month came, and I didn't hear anything, so I decided to stop by the dealership after work and inquire about it. I was told I was still #1 and they were still waiting on allocations to drop 'soon'. I then stepped out and was just looking at some cars on the lot and when a different sales rep approached me asking if I needed anything. I told them I was just looking around and that I have a deposit down for the next M2 they're getting. They asked my name; I gave it and then the sales rep said "ohh yeah, you're #3 on the list". I asked don't mean #1? He said he knew for sure I was #3 because he handles the list. I went back into the dealer and asked why he was telling me I'm #3 and the sales rep asked I hang on while he 'looked into' only to come back and tell me he had made a mistake and I was indeed #3, but he was 'working hard' to move me up.
NO dealership can tell you how many they allocations they will get the next month. We do not know until we get them. If they knew they had two then they would have already attached your name to the production number. You got a simple case on a sales person trying to make you happy instead of telling the truth.

i agree with this. The dealership gets what they gets. You do not get to swap out models. We just got four M4 cab allocations! You think my manager wants that? We have a 11 person waitlist for M4 coupe's! WE WANT THE COUPE'S!

I might have to pull the rip cord and buy an G80 M3 on the lot…. I’m number one for an allocation for an M2 at a small dealer… who knows when I would actually get the car.

I'm seriously considering doing the same but mostly because: 1) I want two 6spd manuals in my garage for life 2) I want individual paint and 3) 473hp is more than enough.

At this point in the G80’s lifecycle I would hold out for the LCI.

I just missed out on a base 6spd G80 with no options that sold for MSRP $73K (pre-Jan build price increase). A G80 LCI might be starting at $80K. Dunno if it’s worth waiting longer and that premium.

I actually prefer the 18in wheel setup. No sense in paying more if you're just going to drop 963's on it!

I do not care for the pre-LCI so the LCI might be worth the money. I am not a G80/G82 buyer as they have become to large of a vehicle.

I'm thinking G87 and G80 as OG M3 and M5, which they are in size and scope. And to me, a manual "M5" sounds great
