<Random Ticket Story>
First ticket I ever got was when I was 16 in a BMW. I was just rocking out to music driving around la la la la, turns out the cop had been following me with his lights on for about two miles and I had no clue. I don't think he believed me that I really didn't see him behind me. He was pissed. I got a ticket. Haven't received a ticket in quite some time, I'm expecting one soon though with the new car. If you treat people with respect and don't feel that you're automatically better than someone - usually you will get the same respect in return. Just don't be a dick. Why do I always say thank you when they give me a ticket? WTF? |

I am not in a position to comment on the rest of your advice but the above is wrong.
You should NEVER leave your registration in your glove compartment. This is something that multiple law enfocement agencies specifically recommend AGAINST.

so here in germany there are 2 ways to get treated as a young guy (i'm 22, got my e92 with 21)
possibility 1: older cops usually don't stop you, because they think you've got wealthy parents and that you are well raised and enjoy a good education and don't drink and drive and such stuff possibility 2: younger cops are mostly pretty jealous, so they just do it to annoy you so that's what i've experienced |

instead of putting your hands on the steering wheel, you should leave them hanging ou the window, so they see them as they are walking to your car, this shows them you have no weapon, and this puts them at ease.

Do you mean your title? You're required to have your vehicle registration in your vehicle if stopped here in the states. $124 fine if you don't. I often deal with people that leave their TITLE in their cars and they realize how stupid it was when their vehicle is stolen. Also you can't enter your vehicle stolen if you fail to register it in your name and the title is elsewhere...like in the missing car.

Just keep the thing in your wallet. God forbid someone does break into your car and steals it, at least they won't have the registration telling them who you are and where your house is.

I got pulled over a lot when I still had my 350Z... but thats expected. 16 year old driving a Blue 350Z, tinted windows, and 19" Gold rims... I've been pulled over countless times in that car... One time I was asked if I stole the car...
Now that I got the 335i its a lot more lowkey than my 350z... Still havent been pulled over yet (knock on wood)

No I mean the registration. But yes, it would be even MORE stupid to carry the title!

Agree with everything you wrote. I am in my 20's. I picked up my car about a month ago. Just before, I was at a work-sponsored dinner and happened to be sitting at a table talking to the spouse of a coworker of mine who is a sargent in my area. I asked him the usual "how do you avoid tickets" and his answer was simply to be honest and upfront. He said out of all the people he pulls over, he is most lenient and understanding of those who treat him like a normal person and don't feed him BS stories (which he has invariably heard before). He's just a normal guy after 5pm, and so is everyone else on the force.
Having said that, a few days later I was driving my new car home. I had a feeling I was going to get pulled over on the way home (not even speeding, just my "great" luck), and sure enough about 30 minutes from the dealer I was. Pulled way over, vehicle off, and hands on the wheel. Officer asked why I thought he had pulled me over. "Sir, I was probably speeding back there." Correct, 82 in a 65. Why were you speeding? "To be completely honest, I was following the traffic and was trying to program the navigation system to get me home. Was not paying attention to my speed at all" How long have you had the vehicle? "30 minutes or so." How is your record? "Clean sir." Have a nice day, and try to pay attention. Now you will read countless suggestions on what to say to cops. "Never admit guilt." "Short answers and don't give anything up." "Don't let them know any more than they need to." Now, I'm not suggesting you give yourself up right away, but I honestly believe that if you are honest and cool with them, and you treat them like you would a friend or a neighbor, you'll get a lot more respect. It may not get you out of the ticket, but if it doesn't, you were going to get it anyway. Fight it in court. I would imagine that the vast majority of the time, however, officers will be happy to be treated with respect. And frankly, in most cases, it is well deserved. Do a ridealong, their job isn't as easy as you may think, and there are a lot of unknowns in pulling someone over. Anything you can do to make them more comfortable should only benefit you in the end. Dan

Haha, I'm not HOPING for one! I think we can all agree that the urge to drive it like you mean it is hard to fight. Guess it all depends on luck whether or not you get caught.
I know the my first drive in my new car was a fast one. |

no joke....i got ticketed for 72 in a 65...4:30 pm, clear day, light traffic, dry roads...clean driving record...I plead not guilty and my pre-trial is in March...hopefully the prosecutor will reduce to a no points, non-moving violation...

Being honest is only going to get you so far. If you clearly blow through a stop sign, you blew through a stop sign. Same goes for speeding. |
