Not because I'm a luddite or one who believes a manual is a must for street cred but because a manual is a much simpler transmission to service and if necessary less expensive to repair or replace than an automatic.

The M2 manual is a good transmission. So too is the 6-speed in my 2023 MINI JCW.
Tell me about the "expensive to replace (maintain)" part... today had to pay ~$475 + tax to replace the DSG transmission fluid and oil filter on my 2018 GTI. This is part of the 40K service on a GTI

I ordered this car because it came in a manual. I was about to order an M240 but waited just for the 6MT

I don’t think I’ve ever bought an automatic transmission car and I’ve been driving over 30 years. Even if manuals are now slower, they will always be more engaging and fun to drive and as cars become overall less fun to drive(CVT transmissions, electric steering, etc) it’s important to save the manuals!

I voted 6mt

6MT arriving next week. In my 50’s I find the engagement that manual transmission provides to be a superior experience to the admittedly faster automatics.
I’ve been daily driving a Panamera ST: the PDK transmission is amazing and it felt superior to my F80 M3 with DCT. That being said, I’m looking forward to the M2 and 6MT.

Modern automatics are pretty amazing. They are now quicker than any of us shifting a manual. They are a perfect choice for many drivers.

....just not for me.

I'm very pleasantly surprised by the 6MT in my new G87. It's smooth, quick, and direct. And....from my perspective more engaging.

Most of all, can we all agree that it's GOOD that BMW (unlike just about anyone else) still gives us a choice?

I think the thing with a manual, while slower, it makes even running to the grocery store or gym more of a ceremony.

You have to think more - even subconsciously about what you are doing. The coordination of your body synchronizing with the machine is really satisfying for me.

It can also be really exhausting in stop and go traffic or even long drives, and it is obviously slower and error prone.

I love that the M2 has options so it can work for more people.

I would have bought an M240 if it came with a 6-speed. But of course it didn't.

That the M2 came with a 6-speed was one of the reasons I bought an M2 instead.

These disputes are always amazing to me, on enthusiast forums nonetheless.

Different strokes for diff bloaks I guess. You could tell me there’s a new auto version that’s 5minutes faster on the Nurburgring - I simply do not give an F.

This M2 is fun because it’s one of the last cars that has the formula that has made cars fun since the muscle car era. Big engine in front, manual trans, power gets put down in the rear. Otherwise - what a bore.

I’m cool with it tho, every car spec’d without the combo of CF roof/bucket seats/6MT, is in my favor when it comes to resale.

Every Fcar that is gated, is 100k more used than the other. Every PCar that is isn’t overly expensive used is because of an auto trans. There’s a reason. One is fun, one is not.

I agree it’s nice there is a choice. I drove only manuals from 16 to my early 30s. I’m 52 and I still don’t miss it.

I’ve heard so many glowing reviews of the ZF8 that I’m excited to own probably the best auto I’ve ever owned in my life. My ‘19 S550 Mustang 10 speed was sketchy. I’m glad reports are that they improved it in the S650.

The M2 will need to cover distance for me to get to the enthusiast driving in my region. I can’t see myself going backward and losing adaptive cruise in the BMW for highway cruising.

If I feel the need to shift gears manually I’ve got my motorcycle for that. Even it has a somewhat clunky quickshifter making it one step closer to a paddle shifting experience, but it is certainly nice for occasional downshifts in the least. I gather some of these quickshiters on motorcycles are buttery smooth. Nice to have options.

The usual points that resonate with me were all made above. W/o 6MT, I simply wouldn't get this car. If the M240i (non x-drive) was available w/ 6MT, I would have seriously considered it.

I am glad we all have the option. I will admit that IMHO, the car didn't have an auto alternative, BMW would likely not have the projected and realized sale volume to justify R&Ding and offering the G87 M2.

It is the end of an era. I do not want to miss my chance to own one of if not the last machine Euro <100k RWD 2 coupe 4 seats petrol w/ a 6MT. It will fight its future lack of real scarcity not to become a classic in a few decades.

I am ecstatic to be able to afford one now. Taking delivery Sat Sep 30th.

I’m in this same boat. I have worked pretty hard in life to get to a point I could consider such a frivolous purchase like this. Ideally I would want to wait a few more years but I have always wanted to own a brand new, 2 door, performance car with a manual transmission. Seeing the Camaro disappear, being pretty disappointed with the S650 Mustang and having to go to a “Dark Horse” to get a decent transmission and cooling, watch the Vette go dual clutch only, the phasing out of the Cayman.

There are very few opportunities left to own something even similar to the dream cars of my younger years. I’m glad BMW has continued to offer the 6mt even if just a bit longer

Exactly the same for me as well. Looked and the same options and came to the same conclusion.

Now I just have to pull the trigger - going back and forth between a few dealers and have my spec nailed down - just trying to get the right deal in the right delivery window so I'm not getting the car in the mid of New England winter

I can relate 100%! Now in my early 50s, I dreamed of a 2 door performance car with manual transmission ever since I sold my e46 330ci 5-speed two decades ago. I could have afforded a preowned 991.2, and since I have a 10-year old those back seats are unusable to us.

This M2 has usable real seats and 90% of the performance and appeal of a 991.2 base (for my use case). My spec is TR, 6-speed, carbon roof and carbon interior trim. I plan to keep it forever or as long as my knees cooperate.

If the 6-speed was not an option on the M2 I would have kept the cash for a 911 later in life. There is nothing else out-there that interests me.

I had an E92 M3 with the DCT. Although it was very fast, when I lost it to a garage fire, I knew I wanted a manual. I regretted buying the DCT for a long time. So I got a manual in my M2, and am loving it. It is a fourth car for me, so it's all about having fun.

I drive a manual car with 650 nm of torque and it’s my first manual car. Hopefully I don’t burn out clutch but i also think stating at this high of a torque limit does not burn out a clutch in an instant because I have seen this car tracked with hard launches for 10k miles and clutch is perfectly fine.

If I lived in the city, absolutely yes an Auto.
But I live in the east coast of Canada, and here traffic jams last 2 minutes,
And the roads are always pretty low on traffic. So a Manual is the fun car.

But again in Toronto no way!

I've never experienced any hassle with having a manual in heavy traffic. Most cars in the UK are still manual tranmissions and traffic jams are common and sometimes epic on holiday weekends. even 70 and 80 year olds are likely to be driving manual cars in those jams.

I suppose if you are texting or web surfing while in slow moving traffic, then it is a bit more difficult with a manual, but the Siri / Car Play integration on the M2 allows excellent hands-free voice to text and text to voice messaging.
