i have always ran an aftermarket intake on all my cars but with supporting other mods. Beside the complexities in the turbo design one thing is sure, they want air flow in and then out as fast as possible.

turbos compress air. if the intake can pull more air, colder and more dense air it would have as much heat created and it should be easier to make power.

i do plan to install an front mount intake and i will take some pics of the stock design. I don’t think many have seen it yet and hard to visualize but there is some common sense in my arguments. why BMW did what they did nobody knows but all speculation. i truly believe to define these as much as possible

Also, I do believe there is some merit to an aftermarket intake system. My belief is you want to understand what you are buying which is why I find it super helpful to see actual data.

I hope someday to put an aftermarket intake on my car but I want to be confident I understand why I’m buying (as part of a full power package improvement) and recognize where it’s benefits actually contribute.

On my M2, I can put my fingers into the BMW intake at the side of the radiator, so the air is reaching the intake mainly through the grilles. The aftermarket intake has to take the same path around the edge of the radiator, but just has a more restrictive cross section at that point, so will restrict maximum airflow into the OEM airbox, compared with the way BMW have provided the intake.

These aftermarket intakes also block about 20% of the intake area to the radiator (about 50% of the grille area, which is about 40% of the total intake area).

Exactly...plus, the exposed filers will collect all sorts of dirt and debris which, yes, restricts airflow.

You know just replacing the OEM paper filter on these cars with some BMC units are 8-10rwhp.

+1

if you want more power the BMC filter will get the job done.

If you want more power and sound, you need a full intake.

Wait, this wasn't a joke?

The BMC filter alone delivers appreciable power?

This part?

It's not a joke; a few dynos posted to prove it.

it delivers even more power if you get it from us, no dyno on this claim yet

Absolutely. Most gains advertised from intakes can be directly contributed to the filters.

For some time, installing intakes has primarily been about the sound and appearance. While swapping just the filter can offer similar performance benefits, it won't change the sound from the stock setup.

I would've bet that neither made a nontrivial performance improvement

It's tough to make horsepower on oem tunes these days because the parts are usually engineered for much higher hp than what they are delivered with. You can make up ground when removing emissions parts such as the charcoal filters and such.

Looks like it’s blocking 50 percent of the radiator surface area in the grill…..Don’t know how good this would be if you plan on tracking. Probably not an issue on the street though.

Are you talking about front mount intakes? if so i've ran multiple track days with front mounts and never saw any difference in temps. I believe at those speeds the air is getting behind the filters as well.

spent my Friday installing my Race Chip and Front Mount Project Gamma intakes. in the process i wanted to confirm what i have read about the poor intake design and lack of fresh air flow into the factory boxes. the intake tubes that attach to the air boxes have no direct fresh air flow. they sit right behind the headlights. I thought maybe that would be air flow reflecting off the radiator but even the radiator is sealed off. There is a small hole of possible fresh air but it was most likely not designed to flow into the intake tubes.

posted some pics but it’s hard to see if hate going on but i can confirm is very little fresh air feeding to the stock boxes.

correct. wanted to show the community that tuners have also identified issues in the oem intake design and any aftermarket system that is not front mount.

everyone wants data but where’s the common sense. no source of fresh air going into the air boxes. we can all debate why BMw did this on the g80 but it’s not like this has been common on other M’s or any car in general. There is always some tube or duct drawing fresh air into the intake system
