bimmercode would not be used for this, its an amatuer tool. this would be with esys coding or BMW ISTA...

Ohh okay. I just assumed that the whole system would be locked down.

Update

I am working directly with Bimmertech as well on this, as not only are they familiar with this process but already say it can be done.

We are talking with spin up all the info, parts and process.

The install certainly would be detailed, but well within what I can do.

We are making progress!

Thanks for the updates. I understand this is still very early on in development, but how long do you think it would be until G87 owners would be able to buy a kit for this?

I have everything but the wire harnesses identified, so full parts list or at least so far.

The vendor in Thailand sells the full kit already, though trying to work with them has been a serious challenge. The kit isn't on their website so the only info I have is from sporadic messages. What I don't have is any of their information on coding, time or even if they offer remote coding (which I doubt at this stage)

I am talking with Bimmertech actively as well, as they HAVE done many kits like this, and are being incredibly supportive of the effort, building a parts list and more, and have coding experience AND do remote coding. I am working with several of their staff on the project to get everything figured out, and likely will be the first G87 they do once we understand the full effort.

The other reality is.. this will NOT be cheap, as the cameras are $575 EACH (and you need 3 or 4) when buying new. Now that said, buying a full kit may be slightly less, folks like Bimmertech have connections and more.

Budget will be a huge issue for me.. I really want to get this done, but candidly have been caught off guard by the costs so far.

Nice effort mate

I've been in Bangkok for 3,5 years now and will be here for another 1,5 years - I do not speak any meaningful Thai but can reach out to my colleagues if you should require some help...would love to have it on my car as well but unfortunately that's not here with me but sitting in a garage in Germany

Cheers

Well if I can get this worked out, we will have a working kit and solution for this for everyone's car!

I appreciate the offer.. I have my friend of a friend talking to them (call, or something, but local) right now and I hope we can get real traction.

It's a LOT of money to do this for sure.. and candidly way more than I thought it would be or for what my budget can reasonably support. That said, the idea is kinda stuck with me now and I at least want to get it all worked out HOW to do it.

Ok.. likely hit a wall with the company in Thailand. They have stopped responding to me in Insta, and my local contact says they have been difficult to talk to even locally.

Their price for the kit $2500ish feels about accurate as I have been building a parts list and have everything, but the wiring harnesses figured out. Doing full retail price lookups I hit $2600 quickly, so their price isn't far off.

I am talking with Bimmertech about this in great detail, as I am 1000% more confident working with them, confortable with their remote coding skills, and know them well.

The Thai shop has stopped responding to me as I think they figured out I am trying to figure out parts.

All I have left if the wiring harnesses.

Well steps forward.

I took the first real step yesterday and ordered what SHOULD be the full wiring harness set from a connection in China. Roughly $80 for the harnesses plus $30 in shipping to see if it all works out.

I have given up on the place in Thailand as I think they have nothing left to offer plus, they are/were terrible to try to work with anyway. They have stopped responding to any messages at all.

Parts:
I THINK I have every piece documented now including part numbers (other than the wiring harness OEM part numbers) for all the pieces. Checking eBay, it brought the $3k ish new prices down to about $700ish for the cameras and ICAM module. I wouldn't be surprised if we found something else missed along the way.

Thai shop (new? used? who knows) - $2600ish
OEM new - $3kish
Ebay used - $700ish

Coding:
Thai shop - uh yeah no, not touching my car.
PRC connection - Says he has and can do the coding, but I am going to need ISTA and ESYS local, which makes it much harder.
Bimmertech - Working with their chief coder, he is 100% confident he can do it and has done similar jobs in the past. No idea on cost yet, as I know their staff so am talking back channel with their coder.

The only issue thus far, is the PRC contact tells me on coding that the vehicle image in the 360 display will be wrong, in that it won't be a G87 M2 since that car isn't available for system. If that is the case, then I would be shooting for a G42 since that is essentially the same, and a 2 door.

Part name Part number Part count Cost
Mirror housing left 51 16 7498211 1 $38
Mirror housing right 51 16 7498212 1 $38

hole punch tool 18 mm 1 $45
Camera wiring harnesses 3 $45
ICAM to BDC harness 1 $45

Total $751

Housings, brackets, wiring harnesses and punch tool are new, the cameras and ICAM are current eBay prices.

Wow $700 is a much better price. But I doubt there will be an abundance of used parts after G87 owners start to retrofit the 360 cam.

Do you know if the bimmertech coder is able to change the color of the G42 model?

I don't know yet, haven't gotten to that level of detail with the coder.

Seeing as most, if not all, parts are shared with other G series cars and the G42 offers surround view as an option, coding might be as simple as adding it to the VO once all the hardware is installed. Reminds me of when I retrofit xenons onto my e90 years ago. Thanks for all the heavy lifting!

Where are you getting these parts costs?

The side cameras listed above (66 53 5A0F6D7) are $554.22 each. x4 is $2,216.88.

I found the side cameras new for about $450 each.. but Ebay.. the updated prices are all from eBay. New part costs are going to be roughly $3k as I mentioned, but careful used part shopping brings it to $750ish. The mirror housings and brackets are new costs, as getting those new just makes sense.

Gotcha. Seems like a big risk buying used cameras off ebay, but if you can find them for $70, I guess you can replace them if they crap out.

Found the PN for the OEM wireing harness for the x7. Should be close to the same, just much longer. I’ve not tried to buy it so, don’t know if it’s available.

Part number. 61119497455

Found a thread where the X7 guys did this retrofit. Seems that several were successful but they had iD7. No idea if it would be different process for iD8

Is it necessary to replace the centre console with the additional button - or would functionality work okay without this?
