Heres a description from the Aussie website. I am not an engineer so please forgive my take on this. I was looking at this more like you’d look at a vented hood. Air flowing from the front off the car creating a Venturi effect pulling hot air from the engine bay.

Not all vented hoods are functional, either. Based in the car's design, their reasoning while may have its merit in general, is really just a sales pitch (I am not sold thatbthe graphic images on their site showing flow are truly R&D from an actual car or just something computer generated). There is nothing to cause that type of flow through and again, the louvers openings are so tight, probably wouldn't make any difference anyway.

When I initially looked at this plate, I thought that if the vents had an opening that allowed air in, that would be better.

Having more openness to breathe and allow air to flow over the cooler will help, but as stated, the air flows from the engine side down and out, not up and in from the underside/ground level.

So that elimates this option.

I bought one two weeks ago with ETA to ship Jan 15. Website now says Feb 3. Any better idea when these will go out?

18k mi with the Zunsport oil cooler grille installed without any issues. You'd have to run over something pretty substantial to penetrate it & cause damage to the oil cooler. Imo, these "skidplates" are just overkill unless you're going off-roading, and at that point you bought the wrong car.

I had a skid plate installed soon after purchase.

Agree the chance of damage, aside from off roading, is somewhat remote but I don’t want to be “that guy”. For me, it’s a cheap insurance policy and peace of mind.

YMMV

I would gladly spend the extra $150 for the Mishi plate again...

It's good to have choices. There's just no evidence that the more expensive skid plates are 1. Necessary & 2. Better.

Probably one of the tougher places to try to convince everyone they're spending needlessly. The M world markup is out of control for sure, glad more companies are showing up to give some options. I personally don't need a bespoke carbon fiber skid plate just to put in my signature to flex on the poors but I respect that some enthusiasts want the option.

I don’t know yet mate because I am just shopping for a guard now before my car gets here at the end of the month.

But I can go out on a limb and say no.
A lot of guys are running a guard to the point it’s more of a worry if you don’t have one.

Additionally, even the factory open oil cooler has a rubber barrier guard in front of it to act as an air dam and prevent air hitting it directly. This then creates a low pressure zone so when your driving the heat is pulled out via a vacume effect.
Long storey short, it’s not the air hitting the cooler that cools it down, it’s heat being pulled out of it .

On any road car with just an air dam and no active downforce creation with sealing side skirts, the underbody pressure drop isn't going to be more than about a hundred N/m^2, with some variation from a higher drop at the front centre to lower at the rear sides. 100N/m^2 pressure drop would create a suspension drop of several mm at highway speeds, which isn't evident on a G87.

The ram effect into air intakes at highway speeds creates a positive pressure increase of several hundred N/m^2, so the net air flow through the cooler should still be due to ram air into the bumper area, which is going to be controlled a lot by how restrictive the exit is under the cooler.

Wonder what BMW engineers would say when explaining why it was decided that it was just fine being all naked and exposed like that.

Your website at https://mad-us.com/mad-bmw-m3-m4-m2-s58-g80-g82-g87-skid-plate/. It has now changed back to Jan 14 since I posted. Just wondering when to expect these to arrive to customers.

Weird I never changed the date. We are just waiting for the trucker to get here and drop them off and we will have trackings sent you same day.
