You're right about Stone. I can handle them, although a little too well as I can drink 2-3 of the big boys plus others. Just don't puke after drinking Arrogant Bastard. It burns and comes up black Great Lakes Brewing Christmas Ale and a couple others in their lineup Victory Brewing Golden Monkey Unibraugh Stone DFH

Homebrewer chiming in, although I haven't brewed in about 3 years.
Around the Bawlmore area, DuClaw is very good. But of course it depends what you like. Regionally, we get Dogfish Head, Clipper City, most of the Brooklyn offerings (Black Chocolate Stout is to die for, but is getting pricey.) Down Harford Road inside the Baltimore Beltway about 2 miles on the right is a beer bar called Racer's that always has an excellent selection, especially now that the holiday beers are out. Too many others to name - it's all good. |

Rogue Dead Guy ale is very good for something you can buy at the grocery store. One of my favorites. But Old Rasputin is my all time favorite. Try it if you get a chance. They don't sell Pliny the Elder around here.

Hey penuto, next time your in Rehoboth shoot down to Agave in lewes. I have a decent selection of beer for being a tequila bar!
I really like Number 9 on draft...Delirium Tremens is really good as well, it's unfiltered though which i'm not a fan of. I like wheat and wheat style beers best. Rose d' Hibiscus is another great one but 2 is enough or your gonna get a head ache. On the subject of Rouge, they make a chipotle ale that everyone seems to love, i'm not that into it though. |

Just tried Dazed and Infused on tap at a local place. Its good, has a plesant hopiness, not really big or thick but a good pale ale with plenty of complexity. Let it warm up a few degrees before drinking since they tend to serve it ice cold.

A few of my favorite breweries would be:
Stone (there are so many great options) Troegs (took the brewery tour...good guys) Rogue (stayed at the Bed and Beer in Newport during the '07 Oregon Brewer's Festival) Victory (the new Yakima Twilight is great) St. Bernardus (Abt 12 is simply excellent) Bell's (Two Hearted Ale is top notch) J.W. Lees (the vintage Harvest Ales are excellent) Dogfish Head (Palo Santo Marron and any "Minute" of IPA are great...Sam C is a great beer guy) Bear Republic (Racer 5 is on tap in the living room) Hair of the Dog (small place...big beers) Three Floyds (Gumballhead...oh yes) Great Divide (one of a few great CO breweries) North Coast (Rasputin is a big favorite) Speaking of the Elder, give props to the Younger as well. Wow. Good stuff.

Wonka - you're in MD. Where are you finding Pliny the Elder/Younger? Are there local places that stock it? Am I just not looking hard enough? Do you have to order it on the Internet? I've never had it, but it's all the rage on Beer Advocate, so I want to try it.

I had it at the '07 Oregon Brewer's Festival but I'd ask the bar manager at places like RFD and Max's (Baltimore) if they have plans to acquire a sixtel of Pliny. Once in a while, you may get lucky.

I got some of this last month and I'd completely agree. Unique but still good.

I live a mile from the original Du Claws and have never been overly impressed with their beers.
Their Venom is the 'IPA that every brew pub makes' and is the only one I can drink with the exception of their 2 Barley Wines (The Bishop and Ressurection??). I know they have been through several brewmasters in their 10 year existance but the beer is on the whole, mediocre at best. Current fave beer is anything by the Oskar Blues Brewery namely Dales Pale Ale, Old Chub, Gordon or Ten Fidy. Good stuff.

I've been cellering Christmas beers for ~10 years, mostly Anchor and Sierra Nevada. Many barleywine ales in the closet too.
Found a couple magnums of 2009 Anchor Christmas near Baltimore last weekend- mailing them home, out of state. I haven't seen Anchor Christmas in my area the last several years. If in Baltimore - buy your beer at Wells Liquors, just south of Towson. AWESOME selection. Worth the drive. Dogfish Head 90 and 120 too hoppy. I like IPAs, but they're over the top. Stone Pale and Full Sail Pale Ale are my favorites, with the usual 1-2 darker, heavy beers each evening. Can't drink more than 1 or 2 heavy beers without falling asleep. Harpoon Winter Warmer is a good one. Sam Smith's Christmas beer is wonderful. I haven't seen any Bert Grant's beers in a while, but their porter is 'perfect'. I really like a good porter or chocolate stout. LiquidSolutions.com is a beer distributor in Oregon that will mail cases of beer to you - ones that you can't get locally. $40 shipping/case, for me. I've bought a couple cases from them, no problems. Dark Horse is another good brewery. Fat Tire has a good seasonal light beer - 'Skinny Dip' - good 'session' beer for long days of drinking, e.g. music festivals. |
