Factor in cost of living in Chicago? How much do you drive? Do you pay for premium gas now? How much is your insurance? It is likely to increase. These should be factored into cost of ownership. I think you can find some of these calculations on the internet somewhere to help you assess the TCO.

I kinda do this right now in a way. I technically live at home(all of my stuff is there) but I stay at my gf's apartment every night. I help my gf with utilites and pay for all groceries and other items, plus going out. So I'm not a total slouch on that end. I do lease but I could have financed if I wanted, I was unsure if I want to keep the car in 3 years and felt this was a better way to keep my options open. It also allowed me to keep the payments down so I could still save $ for a house I am saving for a good sized down payment and I'm about up to 10k over 5/mo of inactive saving, while still having a great time.

LOL
I've had this conversation and it does make you feel all warm and cozy on the inside. Hearing someone your age(I'm 23) pine over wanting a BMW and knowing you have one sitting outside is a nice evil feeling. I don't know how a girl at a bar would react but I bet it would be favorable, since my friends have mentioned it to girls joking and they get all nice and then my gf steps in and shots them down .

I roughly make about 60-70k/yr, I pay $440/mo car, $170/mo insurance, save however much $ I desire that particular mo, about $500 in student loans(almost done ), about $300 in helping the gf with food and utilities. After paying most bills I have about 2k left to do what I desire with. I have no debt other than the student loans, pay off all CC's in full every month(if used), and have between a 780-850 credit score.

The only thing I have to worry about is my gf killing my soul with her endless nagging and trying to make me get too much house than what I really want to spend. All in all life is good :rocks:

IMO assuming you have fairly typical expenses, I would say no less than $60K gross for a 325.

Of course you could probably "afford" it on less, but you probably shouldn't.

If money and financial security is important, then consider a used BMW.

If not, do what I do: spend everything you got and see what you get

Ismabeem, I demand you post more pics of your car!!! Looks gorgeous!!!

As a reminder to those in awe of brand new E90's, and all other brand new BMW's; always remember there is BMW's CPO program, and you're by no means buying someone else's garbage, the cars have to be in tip top shape to begin w/ to even be considered for certification, under BMW's inspection standards at least.

In agreement w/ Ismabeem, it makes more sense to buy a second hand car these days given how quickly cars lose their value over the years, on top of that you get increased vehicle protection under the CPO warranty. Any young person on here, in all truth, should not be buying a brand new BMW, it's one thing if you're parents are footing the bill, but if most of the expenses are on you, take heed. You should ONLY buy a new car if you have enough disposable income to do so. And that's just disposable income.

I put down 20K and having $345 monthly for the car. About 120 per month for insurance. Gas is about 200~300 depend of how much you drive.

My car was 32220 + tax + extended warranty = about 37k out of the door.

Then what is the point this thread. It sounds like you are quite comfortable in your situation. Therefore, you obviously are not trying to ask for any advice. Are you just wanting to know the bare minimium one would need...then its simple math...take your current budget and lower your income until you can't make your car payments...that is what you would need to make. If its just to try and figure out how your $60-70K stacks up against other BMW owners...then do a search. There are threads about income here already.
