Dude if he's into cars and you know he's gonna drive fast, FWD is a no-brainer. I did retarded ass shit in my Civic all the time. I would've done much worse had I had a Bimmer.
Here, if he likes German cars and you're willing to shell out money in this range, this is the perfect car for him. Safe, good fuel economy, better interior than half the shit on that list, handsome looks, and practicality to top it all. It also depends on his maturity level. But if he's into cars, you know he's probably going to try things that other non-automotively inclined kids won't do (donuts, burnouts, drifting, etc). I guarantee he will experiment with turning DSC off at least. Male + 16 years old + into cars + RWD + more than enough power + rain/snow - DSC = you do the math.
I agree with the FWD suggestion above unless you absolutely KNOW he's mature enough to not go hooning about in a RWD BMW.

I would say that none of the above are suitable for someone who has just passed his/she test. For heavensake we are talking about a kid that is still wet behind the ears (no offense) with no experience of what can and does happen when shit goes bad. I personally think anything over 100hp is mental for the first year of driving, after this point and they have proved to be responseable then consider something with a bit more poke, but still nothing as juicy as an M car.
The more I reading these posts, the more I begin to question whether the parents in the US have more money than they have sense. An example, my son will be driving in 2 years time and I have already picked out the car for him, whether he likes it or not. A 1.25L Ford Fiesta. |

Are you totally insane? An M car for a SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD? And not just an M3, but an M5? Okay, setting aside the money issue, because you obviously have much more than you know what to do with (and let's face it - more money than sense, it seems) what about the viability of your offspring? You want your kid to kill himself? Google "Porsche Girl" if you want to see what happens when you mix children with sports cars. Your son is still very much a child. This is not just stupidity on your part, it borders on neglect. Get him a used VW. A slow one. Jeez.

I was only listing BMWs in the price range. I was considering the GTI but i have no experience with VW and nor do i care for them although my son likes it. My son is very responsible and although im sure he will have fun in the car occasionally, he takes very good care of his things and knows right from wrong very well. Twenty thousand for a first car is a very large amount of money but i will be purchasing the car at a dealer auction. I was simply posting the cars he wants, and seeking an opinion. I would like to buy the M3 since I personally want to drive the M3 on the weekends, and there are plenty around 15k. I'm sure insurance cost will be insane with either BMW (especially with an M), so im keeping that in mind. If not the M3, then a 330ci as i have always wished to get a e46 coupe, but got the sedan since it was a leftover, but i learned my lesson and know to buy what i want the first time. Also, my son knows that if he gets any moving violations, his driving privileges will be revoked by me. Since he has a great head on his shoulders and has been wanting to drive as long as he can remember, i hope to make him happy, of course, within reason.
Also, if you guys think im insane, my sons friend got a 2006 G35 coupe as a first car before he even had his permit.

However much I would have wanted an M car when I was 16 I'm glad I didn't get one as I'd probably would have gotten myself into tons of trouble. This is coming from a very responsible person. IMO at MOST a 330, but out of that list, I'd say the E39 for sure. It is probably the most reliable and "slowest" while still having the roundel. Hope that helps

I'd go with a 325i four door to save on insurance. He can have some serious fun in that without getting into too much trouble (hopefully). If he wants to shell out the money to mod the hell out of it... then more power to him.
