The roof and car were in perfect condition. The fact that the guy knew where we lived is reason alone to not do anything, legal or vigilante.

I was going to say the same thing, All the police need you to do is state the hard top is your, then the police will take it form there, they will make the guy prove where he got it from and he is the actual owner, if he can not back up his claim they will assume it is your and you identified it so that is all they need. The problem with this, it you will not get the hard top back any time soon since it will be evidence against the guy.

What will help you if you know something about the hard top that says you know it and the only way you it is if you owned it.

One other thing, it could have matching serial number to the car, many manufacturers these days put the number on various body parts for this reason.
