It's almost like what they did when the made the new Scirocco in the image of the GTI:

Just take the original and smash it down a bit... and maybe make the front/rear a bit sexier:

imagine this RWD with the engine in the back. 911 for poor people!

I prefer this much more over the last gen.

Bring back the RSi and we have a winner!

I like it. It's not as gay as the last one.

When VW decided to bring back the beetle this is what it should have looked like right from the very beginning, much like BMW's take on the original Mini where they added purpose and muscle.......well that was until they built that monster they call the Countryman in their pursuit of profits.

If it were to only drives as well as the new Golf then it deserves to be a success in my eyes and I see some people who might have considered the Mini now considering this instead.

Hey Nikka aka op, I thought you lost it but the user below who I quoted, was kind of enough to show a comparison pic. Look at the comparo, the new Beetle is indeed very handsome. I thought it was a bad idea to make the wheel arches less circular but looking at the comparo, it wasn't a bad idea. Overall,It indeed looks more masculine.
But would I buy it? Maybe as a beater but not as my original car.

It looks good! More masculine and will probably be a good competitor to the Mini and Fiat 500 here in the states.

I dig it. An AWD R version would be fun.

I hate nearly every recent VW US "Update" but i must admit that this is nice. It looks more manly somehow.

Tasteful upgrade, but I wouldn't call it a complete next generation like they're selling it.

looks great.

I'm tired of seeing every brand rocking LEDs. I wish Audi could have kept them exclusive somehow. Seeing Mercs, VW's and Porsche's with the LEDs just dilutes the coolness. and I know VW, Porsche and Audi are all sister companies...but still.

longer nose, spoiler, silver bars on the doors, less rounded nose and top. the flattened top makes the biggest difference.

Then you have Land Rover ruining their cars with them and now the new 6er M Sport...

When they presented this at the NYIAS they kept using the word 'masculine'. Maybe it's more masculine than the older version (over 60% sales to women), but I doubt the changes are enough to tilt public perceptions (which they spent years developing). To do that they need to offer an even more aggressive version. The risk there is that they don't want to loose the girl sales they need to count on so they can only change so much.
