it's kind of like a "portrait" themed contest - the photo must obviously a portrait, not just contain some rando in the background who happens to be facing the camera.

...but, that's an example, this is not a portrait contest is it? (Your examples could be taken as portraits, so we want to be sure).

If the photo meets the intent of the theme is should be allowed. Judging will (should...let's not get that started) sort out the extent to which one's photo captured the essence of the contest's theme. To say some of those photos don't count because they don't fit the fullest extent of your (Rodi's) vision is short sighted. Or 'materially distorted in such a way as to feature it newly revealed through a somewhat opaque or reflective material' if you will.

Why dont we let the judge decide if a given photo meets the theme or not? Its kinda bad when you're so proud of a shot and one of the judge doesnt accept it.

BTW Paul your shot is SICK and is, in my book, dead on on the theme.

The specificity of a portrait came in a little late on this one, maybe it needs to remain more general with the remark that we need to see a clear cut subject in the photo, and the effects happening around that subject instead of it BEING the subject?

For Paul's, I can understand it meets the requirements but then again, nobody can really see the fish in the frame (either off to the left - its tail, or in the droplet, about 1/50th the size of the entire photo).

Maybe we let it stand and the voters decide if it fits the theme enough to be considered one of the best?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the orange hue in the upper left quarter of the picture is the same fish that we can see in the bigger drop.
