Yeah that makes sense. You're pretty insulated from the speed. And because of the suspension you probably don't feel every road imperfection that you would normally, absorbing more of the sensation you'd normally get as the car skips across the pavement.

I'd like to drive a Gen II, but am afraid I'd love it and my MPG concern would be out the door.

I felt the same way when I drove a few. It would not stop me from buying as a DD. if you wanted a track car, then maybe something more raw would be better.
