8.2MP or 10.1MP, doesn't matter. Only reason you'd need higher resolution is if you want to do large prints.
That said, I'd still go with the Rebel XTi. I've got one and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Shooting at night, the noise at 800 or 1600 ISO doesn't leave very many usable photos, but no entry-level DSLR is going to be much better than the other in that area. |

yeah, looks like the site you posted is about $15 cheaper on the Canon. Idk, I'd still use B&H for the peace of mind. I did just check the XTi at Amazon - it's between the 2. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-...4522329&sr=8-2 I've been getting a lot of my gear at Amazon. Completely reputable when you buy from them (not 3rd party), very pleased with their stuff...fwiw.

uhhhh, yeah? Why buy a high-end camera and then put a mid-grade or low end lens on it? It's like putting wal*mart tires on the bimmer. I've yet to see a Sigma that can match a canon or nikon across the board. And tamron...oh dear...

If you have a Ritz Camera store in your area check them out. When I bought my D40x they gave me a whole bunch of free stuff like, 12 free lesson classes(they teach, which normally cost like $200-300), a year worth of free prints, coupons on more gear, 2 lesson DVD's and maybe a few other random things. Pretty cool, I'm going to sign up for the classes soon, I've talked to a couple photographers in my area and they even say those classes are more then worth the money and they were free.
They also had at the time a 2 lens kit for the D40x. They may still have it. You get the standard 18-55mm lens as well as a 55-200mm lens, plus a decent carry bag. It was like $999.00, basically giving you the 2nd lens for free. EDIT: Well they still have the kit and it is $949.00, here is the link. http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/SLR1161.htm?bct=t1134

There was a noticeable issue with vignetteing in the Tamron, and the Sigma, while better, left a lot to be desired through a range of aperatures. It was OK around f/8, but other than that, not worth the money. Why spend the money on a Sigma or Tamron and get shitty images when I can spend a little more and get something outstanding for my camera. They haven't gone bankrupt because there are enough idiots that think the lenses are just as good as a Nikon or Canon lens. Let me guess, you think all the important stuff is in the camera body, right?

I absolutely believe the most important aspect of any photograph is the photographer. But the best photographer can not produce an image that exceeds the quality of the lens. And my comparison, as well as those of many reputable photographers and labs, show the Tamron to repeatedly trail a Sigma by a wide margin in most lenses, and the Sigma to trail the Canon or Nikon by a smaller margin in every lens review I've read or performed. Finally, don't take liberties with what I have typed. I made no absolute statements, as you have tried to paraphrase me, but instead offered the OP my significant experience, and the reulting opinions I have formed over 20 years of photography.

WTF does a KIT lens have to do with anything??? My 18-70 AFs KIT lens is outstanding. I've made images with it that I've sold for hundreds of dollars. Are you making a point or just being an asshole?

lol wow this post was very insightful till you guys are debating over which lens is better. thats just way too advanced for me. i'm trying to find the best price possible for the kit that comes with the lens. I know ebay has good deals, but they chop it up and throw in other brand lenses. I checked out the amazon site for the canon but i'm not sure if all the sites that give a price for the "kit" come with the same stuff as if you were to get it directly from canon or nikon.

If it seems too good to be true, it is. You'll start hearing about grey market vs. US. The US stuff is imported by Canon / Nikon USA, and they carry the warranty. The grey market is imported Canon / Nikon gear, but it's imported by the store and not warraneted by Canon / Nikon USA. Amazon does not sell grey market to my knowledge. 3rd party retailers through Amazon may, it's hard to say. Good retailers like B&H or Adorama, who carry both, will tell you this up front. The retailers that have crazy low prices are generally using grey market, don't want to admit it, and piece out the kits. They'll tell you there's a warranty on the grey market camera, but it is through the store, not the mfg. That's a little shady to me, given the complexity and price of these things. I have only one grey market piece, an 80-200mm f/2.8 lens I bought about 10 yrs ago, and the AF switch is broken. Thankfully the lens still works fine, but the retailer is out of business and no repair shop around me will touch it. One other thing on the lens debate - you can usually re-sell your Nikon or Canon lenses at nearly the price of a new lens. Something to consider, as many people buy and sell lenses as they upgrade over the years. One advantage of Nikon is they've never abandoned or obsoleted old lenses with new bodies. Canon doesn't do it often, but has on occasion. The 50mm f/1.4 from my Dad's old Nikkormat, the camera I learned on, still works on my D200. None of the auto anything works, but you can still make images with it. I don't know of another mfg that can claim that.

In regards to B&H and Adorama, you say they carry both grey and US market items? So if I were to get one from those sites, how would one know which one is which?

they call it out right on the page. It's right there next to the price, so you can tell immediately.

I don't see any grey market right now for the d40x or XTi bodies on Adorama pr B&H at the moment.

Here's an example for B&H, looking at lenses: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/8...for_Nikon.html
Notice next to the "Nikon", it says USA or imported. You can click the "USA" and "Imported" and it gives an explanation. Very good site. If Adorama or B&H don't specify, it's USA.
