i wanted to be like FFFFUUUUUUU, but then i was like
seriously though, i watched all the documentary that solefald posted earlier, those russians got fucked up. the people that are at the diiachi plant still are surely going to suffer from the same shit. it might not be chernobyl yet, but it has plenty of the capacity to do so. i hope it doesn't happen, but that would be a large chunk of an island nation gone if they had to quarantine it. besides, who the F#$! build a nuclear power plant on the ocean in an earthquake zone like japan?! |

japanese coined the phrase 'tsunami', build nuke plant on fault line, tsunami. that's the only part that makes no sense to me. don't get me wrong...i <3 japan, but seems like someone was asleep on the wheel with that choice.

I could be wrong, but I think you MUST build nuclear reactors near huge bodies of water precisely for cases like this. And there're not many places NOT on the ocean shore (and many of them have other nuclear plants) - so this place is as good as any. As far as the fault line goes - there are at least three underneath japan, so again - half a dozen of one, six of the other. I bet you it was a coin toss.

I think here in California we have two nuclear plants on the shore. You need large amounts of water to cool it so they have no choice but build it by the ocean.

It would definitely cause corrosion if they just got it from the ocean and dumped it in there but the water is desalinated to convert salt water to fresh water.

desalination in itself is a major power consumer. i can't see that it would be very efficient to desalinate water to cool the reactor, but i'm no nuclear engineer.

Right, but that's the point - you need a large body of water if all else fails - which is pretty much the case here. This is why they put landing strips in a wide open field or near shallow water - so if something goes wrong, there is room for error.
