Agree that suspension adjustment is probably not the reason the car receives test drive time.

More likely the reason is in order operate the engine operate the vehicle long enough to have all the readiness monitors complete to ensure the engine's vast assortment of sensors are working and the car is emissions compliant.

At the same time the engine control, and for automatics the transmission controller, is adapting.

Wouldn't do to have a customer get in his new car and have the engine running rough or worse see a check engine light or have one come on shortly after leaving the dealer.

A couple trucks roll in and the techs just want to QC as quick as possible, not spend 30 - 40 minutes driving them around, I think the book on QC compensation would make that a losing proposition.

Someone posted that DX's are done by the GM, GSM or SM who goes on a Sunday drive to exchange vehicles. I can tell you that's not the way I remember it being done, salespeople did their own DX or a couple of retiree runners did them.
BMW dealer told me the tech only drives the car after PDI for around 1/2 mile.

As for the vehicle exchange the GM at the Porsche dealer I used most often told me that's the way it is done. But of course dealers are not obligated to do it that way.

Retired people driving DX cars is ok. Even a sales person really. The it would a fool of a dealer employee to act up in a new car. Nothing can cut short a career at a car dealer than to have a car accident, one in which the employee is at fault.

In one notable case I recall a new shuttle driver had an accident just a block or so from the dealer. Lost control of a Porsche SUV shuttle vehicle (Cayenne probably, but I once got driven home in a Cayman GT4). He walked to the dealer to report the accident and was fired on the spot.

Thatbwas BMWs M2 marketing color so it only goes to stand that it would also be the main color of the HEAs distributed to dealers for the initial launch/reveal.

Snapped a few camera pics before detail, while we sign. I forgot to check if I'm on pirrellis or michelin though. Find out in just a few!

They get paid a set amount for getting the new cars ready, so they race through them, unless that's changed, the quicker they can do one, the more they make.

As far as dealer exchanges, my BMW dealer is 4 miles away and there is a Porsche, an Audi and a Mercedes store there too, one after another.

In the many years I've lived here, I've seen Audis, BMWs, Porsches and Mercedes with d-tags being driven very hard on the nearby main road, by lot guys, not techs. I'm not sure if they are doing a DX, but I can't imagine any other reason the dealer would let them drive those cars.

As far as the GM doing a DX, I get why the dealer might make that claim, and it's not 100% outside of the realm of possibility, but, other than the owner, the GM is the highest paid employee and others do the DX grunt work. I've never known of anyone above the level of salesperson doing a DX.
