Very true. It's always better to have nice glass than the latest body. The 17-40 is a really great landscape lens.

Yup this photo was taken 2009 ish? I had the 20D back then. I've kept all my glass but upgraded bodies. 20D>1Dmk2n>5Dmk2. I just recently left Canon and went Sony mirrorless. A7 with Zeiss glass.

What ISO are you pushing? trying to get faster shutter speeds?

This light was perfect, so I was set to Manual mode to deal with the widely varying backgrounds, ISO 400, f/8.0 and 1/2000-sec.

Here's one where conditions were not so ideal, so I was at ISO 1600, f/8.0 again for DOF, and 1/1600-sec. The eagle flew into the shade, but bits of light hit it. This is around an 80% crop!

As light gets worse and worse, I'll let SS drop down to 1/800-sec. for birds and much lower for mammals. With the eagle in shade, my next steps would have been wide-open aperture, before lowering SS down to 1/1200 or 1/1000-sec.
