So I’m driving around the city on a cold winters day and make a right had turn onto a Main Street. Next thing the rear hangs out at roughly 30 mph and needed a decent amount of opposite lock to avoid spinning around and making a complete fool of myself.
Quick check on tire pressures and 41 degrees on three and 51 on the tire that spun up. Note to self , burnout could be useful for bringing tire temps up.. Next set of lights the older guy next to me in the Honda Jazz says through the window , you need to sell your BMW and get one of these……. |

The local TV news this morning came back from a commercial break playing "(Can't Get No} Satisfaction" in honor of Mick Jagger's 80th birthday today. (Note to self - stay off Sir Mr. Jagger's lawn!) They then threw over to their older weather guy in transition, who said that never mind satisfaction...he can't get no Metamucil.....

I was a teenager in the '60s and grew up in Manhattan Beach in Southern California. One of my favorite memories was the time in 1965 when Satisfaction being played on one our local AM radio station (KFWB I think). I'm walking across the beach on a perfect day (they were all perfect days) and it seemed like everybody had their transistor radios tuned to the same radio station and Keith Richards' famous guitar riff begins echoing across the sand, then Charlie Watt's drum beat kicked in, and finally Mick Jagger's voice was seemingly everywhere across the beach blasting from all those tiny radios. I remember that perfect moment like it was yesterday and it was 58 years ago! Happy Birthday Mick. Thanks for all the great music and awesome live concerts over the years. Okay, now I'm feeling really f*kkkkkkking old!
My drivers license expires this year. Usually, I just renew online and that is that. But no, I turned 70 since my last D/L was issued so I have to go in to the DMV and take a written test and take a vision test. WTF. So, I schedule and appointment and go in get my drivers license renewed in person. All was good. My amazing wife went with me because I am hard of hearing so she is my ears when I'm talking with DMV employees. For the record, I swear my hearing loss is from too much rock and roll played too loud and NOT old age. What is making me feel really old today is what happened when I had to fill out the questionnaire. Height: an inch shorter than I used to be. Eye color: still Blue Weight: Same as last time plus a couple of bowling balls. Hair color: This is what sent my head spinning. Last time it was blond. Now? They gave me choices. I couldn't decide between white and grey. I chose grey but now I'm having second thoughts. I signed my questionnaire saying it was the truth under penalty of perjury. Maybe my hair is white and not grey. Could the DMV police come after me and charge me for lying? Such anxiety. I'll be over it in the morning. Mostly, I'm just happy to still be here. But, there are pressures about being old that take their toll. Silly rant over. |

^ If they come after you, you can tell them your sight is not so good and you can't tell white from grey. Problem solved. lol
So at what age do you have to take the written test? Or does it go by when your current license expires? I want to get a head start and study up on it so I will be prepared. I'm sure I've forgetter half of that stuff. |

Do they still require parallel parking? If so you can just say "I push a button".

In California, it's the first drivers license renewal after you turn 70. In my case, it's 74. If you "qualify", they make you come to the DMV in person and take a written test and a vision test. There is no driving test required. If you just glance through the online handbook right before you go in to take your written test, you should be fine. There are some really dumb questions on the exam, some of which aren't even covered in the handbook. But it's multiple choice and most of the correct answers are logically obvious. So if you don't pass, there's something seriously wrong with you and you'll have to stay off my road! Kidding, of course. If you fail, just post here and tell us and we will console you and we promise not to laugh and make fun. |

I didn't have to take a driving test, just a written test. I would love to take a driving test just to tell them, "I push a button" to parallel park. While I'm at it, I can say, "I don't have to look over my shoulder to change lanes since my car does it automatically." "Backing up, steering, braking?, yeah, my car does those things automatically too". I'm sure the driving instructor would be amused. |

I'm sure that half of the questions today deal with intoxication, drowsiness, cell phones, and distracted driving. None of these were huge concerns back in the days when we all got our licenses and started driving on people's lawns.....

I forgot seatbelts in my list above! The current road tests require the driver and all passengers to fasten their seat belts before inserting the keys or starting the engine.....

It was a lot more fun to be in the 20s in the '70s than to be in the 70s in the '20s.
