I would just prefer that they were more honest in the marketing vice feeding lines of BS. Just tell me "we're Akra, we're awesome, and you will pay for it." I don't need claims of "game changing" and "substantial" that don't hold up to scrutiny.
Does anyone actually fall for lines like that?

Assuming they are using Grade 5 or similar titanium, supplied as sheet or tube, it is less than USD$50 per kg wholesale, so a complete 20kg or so exhaust system would have no more than $1000 of material in it. It may be a bit more difficult than some grades of stainless steel to fabricate components with, but nothing the right machine tools wouldn’t make short work of.

I’m almost insulted at that price. The fact that M2 enthusiast are avid modifiers and we all love upgrades is one thing, but this price is an insult to our intelligence and I feel they’re trying to take advantage of us…. And if Akra’s cost of production was super high, then I question their intelligence

The Akra slip-on for my 2022 992 was $6k. Not sure why the M2 version turns out so much more expensive.

You're better off spending $3500 on some Apex wheels and saving 35lbs. What you do with the remaining $12,000? Could probably blow it on hookers and blackjack.

Here’s the way I’m looking at it. I cross shopped 3 cars, the Emira ($100k) 718S ($92k) C8 HTC ($85K)
My M2 build with roof, carbon trim, reg seats etc is $68k. So in my small mind, I figure I can responsibly spend about $22k or so in mods and not be a fiscal dick. My plans: M HAS $2830, VT wheels $3500, PPF $6000, Indy paint $4500, AKRA no tips $5000. So I’m $68 + $21,830 for a car I’ll daily for 7-8 years, tour the country with my wife and give to son 1 or 2 when it’s time for something new. Forgot to add snows $1200. I find the M2 an incredible bargain and it’s a full circle for my wife and me. Here’s our first sled 100 years ago. 76, Weber, ANSA, lead substitute (not my actual car) .. Why keep the secondary cats if the midpipe is replaced? Does this system not bolt up directly to the downpipes, or does the G8x have some kind of weird extra piece in the exhuast that the F8x cars don't?
All the F8x cars I've owned had the secondary cats in the midpipe, of course, as well as my current '21 M2 Comp, though basically every aftermarket full system gets rid of the secondaries. Or, did Akra add secondaries to their own midpipe? Are they trying to go for CARB approval or to please some other regulatory bodies? Or are the secondary cats there to cut back on the rasp which is always exemplified by Ti systems? Ti is very strong and light, but it's a fairly brittle metal, so for these TT inline-6's, it tends to bring that rasp out in a way that isn't always very pleasant. Ti for our exhausts sounds best when it's just the rear-section (or just the midpipe), but it can sound a bit strange with a full system. I just can't imagine this system is much louder or flows much better than the very quiet stock G8x exhuasts (they sound even quieter than the F8x stock exhuasts, to my ears). Obviously, the tone will be quite a bit different with titanium, as it's density results in a higher-frequency resonance, and I'm sure it's lighter than these overly-heavy stock exhuasts, but beyond that, I'm not seeing the real benefit of this. None of this is to say it doesn't look great, any parts I've owned from Akra have been exceptional quality, and the G87's weird design of clashing geometric shapes does allow for those hexagonal tips to work (looks far better than that hideous new M-Perf exhaust design), but at 12k, Akra seems to really be leaning hard into the "automotive jewelry"-market. They've always been pricey, but 12k is absurd for anything other than a car built for the SEMA show, or something like it. Hell, even their F8x exhaust is too expensive, but at least it was only an extra thousand or so over the other exhuast makers. None of those systems are cheap, all around 4k for a full cat-back, Akra's is something like 5k iirc. I would have probably gone with Akra if they made a single mid-pipe for my M2C like Active Autowerke does, but the Akra showed very little appreciable benefit, whereas the Active Signature system does actually improve the exhuast flow, as well as being quite alot lighter than the massive stock system (not sure of the weight diff between the F8x Akra and something like the AA Signature, but it can't be more than a few lbs considering the AA Signature was about 30lbs lighter than stock when i weighed them). 12k for this really makes me think it was just made for the "bling factor". You could properly transform plenty of other things about the G87 with that much cash, including the exhuast, and the awful stock cast wheels. I actually live near a custom exhuast shop that either does, or did, make Titanium systems for Noble, and they'll make you a custom Ti system for just about any car you want, and it will be of excellent quality, while costing significantly less than just about every exhuast on the market. You could even have them make a Ti system built around a single midpipe like the AA. Hell, even Vivid Racing has their own brand of Ti exhuasts (I think they used to be sold under the "Agency Power" name). They made one for the OG M2 and it's less than 3k, don't think they made one for the Competition, but if they did, it would likely only be marginally more expensive (they would just have to revise the part of their midpipe-section to bolt up to 2 downpipes instead of one). Can anyone explain why this system is somehow worth 12 grand? As someone else mentioned above, even if they're using the best possible grade of Ti, the numbers just don't really add up, even with the labor involved in making it. Even if they're attempting to get CARB-approval or something, that wouldn't cost a company like Akrapovic so much that they're forced to sell the system for 12k. |
