Things my Jeep can do that the G87 can't: get 1200 miles to a tank. No, I'm not kidding, Hybrid FTW.
Things my G87 can do that my Jeep can't: corner. I took a corner yesterday that I normally power through in the M2 & GTI, at what I call normal speed, literally said "oh shit!" out loud because I forgot this thing is like 6 feet taller than either of those cars and on mud terrains.

Yeah but not highway. My 330e was great for commuting around town because my commute was short. I did almost all of it, save 3 mi, daily on all electric. I could go a couple months without filling up as long as I didn't have to drive more than 10 mi at a time.

I found interesting that all the Jeeps at the rental car facility in HI were 4xe. We didn't have any place to charge it. So it didn't really do us any good from a fuel standpoint.

On a full charge it can. I drive to the office and hit a stretch of freeway, all electric. Pretty eerie when you're doing 70 and all you can hear is the tires. If your commute is less than 27 miles, you're not using gas in the thing. Also, if does 0-60 in 5 seconds lol.

Right, that's what I meant. After electric is up, you're stuck with the wonderful Wrangler mpgs. At least my 330e got 38 mpg highway after the electric ran out. The Wrangler with 2.0 turbo has much better overall range.

I think the TJ wrangler on old man emu with 31s is top five vehicles ever made. We’ve had 2 of them including the one we bought for our sons hs years. Love jeeps so much.

I have to agree. We picked this '03 X up for our son last year, he paid 1/2. 2 owner (1st owner 18 years) stock except for aftermarket head unit, all paperwork/maintenance records, 150k mi. Jumped on it even though he was only 14 because unmolested TJs don't come up very often. He's already added rock rails, new wheels & tires, aftermarket headlights. He finally has his permit so he's been practicing driving.

My build was $88k with a bunch of MP parts and the car looks sick. I get compliments all the time on it. I’m amazed at the value of it all considering you still get the s58 and the track with is the same as the g82

I say this because I picked up a $61K Wrangler 4Xe over the weekend. The interior is something a farmer would love. It's big, its' dumb, it's a toy that I love driving around. Also, I now have 150 miles on it and the gas tank is literally full, like I used 10% lol. Plug in hybrid on mud terrains FTMFW.

I get back into the G87 to start it up and move some fluids around and just really hit with the quality of all of the touchpoints, the quality of iDrive 8 with its crisp and snappy graphics and intuitive controls. Just the overall niceness of the cabin.

That with the fact that it has the balance and acceleration of a 911 that costs twice as much, seats 4, and is a beast to look at, how can you not love it for mid $60s? Its such a unique car with an insane value proposition that frankly doesn't get enough credit.
Well, it did win MotorTrends Performance Car of the Year.

What i'm saying is, enjoy those cars, cherish it, you wont find a small manual transmission luxury coupe soon.
A competitive performance value would be the Mustang Dark Horse. In evaluating my next purchase, the M2 slightly edged it out due to way more tuning potential (even factoring in the required Finland unlock), and BMW's superior materials and fit & finish.

Both are similarly priced, and the Darkhorse gets insane lap times. But I don't have the pockets to regularly track my car on road courses. Drag racing is considerably cheaper, and the BMW handles more than well enough to have fun on curvy roads.

It's still a fair test, IMO, because both cars are factory stock.

The other thing I've heard is that DH's motor is already pretty highly tuned, while the G87 is DETUNED to preserve hierarchy. So if you are tuning, the G87 has a lot more easy power waiting to be unlocked. Disclaimer: I cannot verify this myself.

Also, unless things have improved since I last checked, it's easy to get G87s at MSRP, while DHs are commanding ADMs.

My view is: if ALL you care about is the track, why aren't you grabbing a late model 1LE? If you plan on doing anything else, especially daily driving, the G87 wins pretty easily IMO. The DH engine note is awesome, I'll give it that.

honestly if all someone cares about is the track they should buy an actual race car. Even a 125cc kart will blow away any street legal "track car" in terms of intensity/fun, let alone the F1600/F2000/F4 junior formula cars. They all make street cars feel like 10k pound numb boats.

i respect BMW for not sandbagging any of these tests by throwing on a set of "optional" near-slicks, and instead choosing to present the car in a setup that people would actually use on the street. but it does create a funny dynamic in that keyboard racers get to claim that the DH is measurably faster or more capable than the G87, which as we all know is BS - they are so close that even with the same driver you're gonna get mixed results head to head.

but yeah- these are all street cars. a well driven and prepped SRF - or even SMX5 - would probably beat either by a considerable margin around a track

The Dark Horse was about a full second faster on their course, and the G87 M2 was sitting on Cup 2 tires. For me, I drag race. I can't afford road course racing as a hobby. But if someone is a regular track goer, I can totally understand them preferring the Dark Horse.

Someone could just as easily argue that for my $75K I could put a monster engine and fat tires in a Foxbody and get faster quarter mile times (or any number of other options). But I'll enjoy my street + strip BMW more, for other reasons.

Some great cars in the 65-75 range: M2, Dark Horse, Stingray. It's just personal preference at that point. You can sort of make an argument for the Supra, but that would be last on my list.

the greatest argument for the S650 platform as regular track car would probably boil down to parts costs vs any real difference in performance- and at that point, a regular GT will have an advantage over either. if i was serious about doing more than 8-10 track events a year in my road car, i think i probably would have gone SS 1LE.

ill give TH a little bit of credit for disclosing same driver and tires though. point still stands about tire differences.

G87 has more potential because it’s factory forced induction. Some basic mods, E85, tune adds probably close to 300 whp. DH being naturally aspirated would take the addition of a supercharger to make the same and that would probably cost a bit more.

As someone else mentioned, the Cup 2 240 tyres that BMW fits as an option on G87s in markets outside of the US are quite a bit less sticky than the Cup 2 or Cup 2R (competitive to the Trofeo RS). The Cup 2 240 is much closer to the PS4S.

Very lucky to have both in the garage. The 718 with the flat 6 is definitely more of an event, but the M2 punches well above its weight. I want to enjoy both of these incredible examples while they are still available.
