I ordered an m3 so this isn’t just defending the m2 because it’s the car I want. That review from the drive was silly in my opinion. The guy complained the m2 didn’t have all unique parts and gripes about that for a whole paragraph. If he’s disappointed by a ‘shorter wheelbase m4’ he’s really gotta re evaluate his expectations.

Well, you can normally drive at that speeds among heterogeneous traffic in German autobahns and no helmet is required, so definitely doing that in a circuit is much safer no matter what

<rant> Hello, where the F do you think the parts came from for the last F87 M2C? The entire powertrain, bracing, cooling, exhaust, suspension, etc. were all lifted from the F80/2 and used on the F87. All they did was retune them, just like they are doing with the G87. Same shit, different day. </rant> OK, I feel better now that I got that off my chest. |

I am sure these may not be the standard seat remembering that this is a prototype test drive/s and if they are there will be a CF seat option.

There is one shared platform between the G2x and the G42, they are basically the same car only with a shorter wheelbase for the G42 and some minor changes, and of course these minor changes apply to the M's as well. Exactly the same as we had with E82/E92 and F8x/F87, but for some reason it seems to be a huge problem only now with Gxx cars. But how on earth did anyone expect big changes between the M3/4 and M2, starting from the same platform? Perhaps they expected a 2-seat mid-engine with a high-speed NA engine? Instead of being happy to still have a pure rear-wheel drive car with MT gearbox, without electrification, mild-hybrid, 4WD or other crap, they are still complaining about something that could not be possible to achieve nowadays. They could have made a GT4RS-like car with the Bmw logo, and someone would still have complained. |

My guess is that BMW thought they would impress the auto journalists by telling the assembled crowd "the new M2 has M3/M4 components" - which anyone who followed the f-gen cars already understood. But apparently it was news to journalists who, not realizing what a common platform actually means, decided that now, because the M2, M3, M4 have the same damn drivetrain- this time it is bad. Every single article leads with that point; "it has M4 parts" - which seems odd news, but here we are. That said, no matter how good the G42 platform is, and no matter how long the M2, M3, & M4 have used a common drivetrain / suspension, I think we are all expecting the G87 to be something more unique than a short-wheelbase M4 - which is a little odd because it will obviously share the drivetrain and it clearly looks like nothing else in production ... Perhaps the auto industry is just changing too rapidly for the media surrounding the industry to deal with it - no one is really certain what to make of anything because the old standards are crumbling / no longer relevant. I mean, I just drove an i4 that was faster than anything else I have ever driven- so should I be impressed with a slower Mwhatever? Who knows. I'm sure that like the G42, the G87 looks better in person. Still, it needs a lower-ratio top gear - perhaps a 7 sp. manual to match the old DCT top gear ratio. |

The non-carbon buckets seats are in the 6MT car which appears to be an earlier prototype (it has the black/white prototype camouflage and not the flashy marketing one for the 8AT one), so it is quite plausible that its seats are non-production.

But that doesn't mean that the M2 "steals" the components from the bigger cars, it was developed from the beginning with the M2 in mind and that one just came out last due to the base car's life cycle. |

Maybe bmw will follow suit and update them with the m3/m4 seats for the LCI refresh ala f87 competition.
