1. It's electronically controlled and thus can preempt a slip
2. It's low weight at only ~250lbs

Which makes it the most simple and light AWD option.

I don't know the details of the M based X drive but best case scenario is it's some kind of reverse Haldex system where it can activate the front axle when needed. Which means best case scenario we are at 4K lbs. I really am guessing that BMWs system will weigh more due to the power going back then front again and we're talking 500hp of robust strength here the Haldex system in Audi is really not for more than 420 or so based on some breaks I've seen.

Of course a proper AWD is going to be even more weight than the Haldex if that's the way bmw does it.
They're not developing it from scratch. They're likely taking it from the existing X3/X4, which is probably the same system that's used in M5/M8.

It's an off the shelf system from ZF (extension to the RWD ZF8). Longitudinal RWD gearbox with extra transfer case addition. Chain drive front PTO plus wet multi-plate clutch packs to distribute torque. Electronically controlled.

BMW M xDrive system weights 50 kg/110 lbs:
  1. 1805 kg - M3 Competition - https://www.bmw.de/de/neufahrzeuge/m...che-daten.html
  2. 1855 kg - M3 Competition M xDrive- https://www.bmw.de/de/neufahrzeuge/m...-m-xdrive.html

The 50kg weight delta is also mentioned on the M xDrive overview video on the BMW M YouTube channel:

As an owner of an RS3, I can attest that the Haldex system used in that chassis is NOT the best AWD system, being primarily a FWD that can send an actual maximum of 50% to the rear axle. The real Torsen Quattro we had in our previous B7 S4 was a much better system.

That being said, the system in the M3/4 is exactly as you say, where it is primarily a RWD system that can send torque to the front axle as needed, which is much better for handling dynamica. BMW confirmed that the AWD weighs ~50kg/110lb more than the RWD car.

You are quoting EU weight, which includes 75kg for driver and some luggage...

Also, that's the weight for the base model, which does not include CCB or the carbon buckets.
