1. By the time you drop into the 10s, roll cages are required. Alternatively, if you can hit 135+ you are also required to have a cage

2. Anything below 10s has to have the frame and cage certified by the NHRA and there are more requirements around padding

3. Fire extinguishers, window nets, external ignition kill switches, and some other stuff also become mandatory under 10s / over 135 mph

4. Under 10s also requires a competitor's license, fire retardant clothing, full body coverage, etc.

5. There are best practices around securing batteries, swapping fuel tanks for fuel cells, etc in the general street classes

6. Specific requirements around harmonic balancers for engines once you drop into the 10s

7. Parachute is required at 150 mph+

At the end of the day this is another example of "safety regulations are written in blood". Going fast is only half of the racing equation. Doing it safely enough to stop is the other half.

I had a '98 Camaro build complete with a roll cage and everything, but no parachute because I used it more for autocross than drag racing though I did run 11s with it a few times. My buddy had a < 8s 2001 Trans Am running a turbo LS1 + NOS setup.

Glad this dude in the video is alright, but if you're going to go through the trouble of building that car and driving it [...]
Great post. Glad that this person is ok but please put some safety in your seemingly bottomless budget. I went to the drags when my G82 was stock and they required me to have an approved helmet and turning people away without the proper cages , pants , chutes etc. Many a stripped civic with an oversized snail went home disappointed.

Like mentioned before: this guy is lucky to have no broken bones and just only pain in his chest and back. Walking away from a crash going 170 is insane. I feel like their should be a rule put in place to mandate having parachutes and role cages. I know this guy is used to the streets but a parachute would’ve helped so much.

Your correct, while MOST( not all) don’t cover track days , most insurance do offer track day insurance at a specific rate since it’s based on temporary coverage for the said dates you choose.

For anyone that wants to know.

Rates per day for example a $30,000 car will cost $190 per track day for coverage and $230 per event and the higher the car price the higher the price is per day .

Here are some companies that offer track insurance

Oh wow, that is crazy expensive. So you go to the track 4 times a month, you're paying like $1k ?

If i wreck at a track I'm having my friends push the car a few blocks away....then I'm calling my insurance company and telling them I was involved in a hit and run

Kid is very fortunate to walk out of that without serious injury; could’ve been a lot worse! Also lucky the car didn’t roll. Hope it’s a lesson learned, these cars have the potential to be tuned to crazy fast levels, but in the wrong hands are a major hazard. Thank god it wasn’t on a public road.

Yeah, if the car would have starting flipping, he'd be finished. BMW or otherwise

Glad this dude in the video is alright, but if you're going to go through the trouble of building that car and driving it 3 hours to race (good job taking it to the track and not on the street) I hope they learn their lesson from this and build in the safety aspects for the next car.

Oh and FWIW, it's entirely possible to build a "super sleeper" and have the roll cage and everything integrated so well most people won't notice it unless they're sitting in your car. So no excuses around obvious looks or anything.
Same here…I had a six speed manual 98 Formula built with cage, battery cutoff switch, fire ext, DS safety loop, 5 point etc. Didn’t need a chute as I wasn’t over 150mph in the quarter. You’re taking your life in your hands with a 8 second car without safety gear and only a regular 3 point seatbelt.

Probably not right suspension mods. Going that speed, u need a pro to dial in the suspension or know what ur doing or have the shop that did the build know how to tune the suspension. Stock suspension @ that speed is no bueno. Def should have had A/M suspension. Car is not designed for those speeds. Thats one reason for a limiter. Not knowing his build, I know that should be a key component that should have been addressed. Also having the correct aero is key too. We arent talking about 150 MPH. 170 in that is scary. That 20 MPH makes a big diff. And what about tire pressure? So many things could have contributed to the fail. Full M car...diff story.

That power he's pushing...its not all about the engine. Brakes, aero, susp, braces, etc. And high speed training. Both hands on the wheel. You can keep the wheel steadier if both hands are on it instead of one. The one hand at that speed....the littlest movement on the wheel and the car is out of control.

Hes lucky he walked outta that.
