oldbmwtech if you push on it where it mounts in the front, does it give, or does it hit metal within a few cm? |

Is it just me or does this look like damage from more than just one rock? Like I see the big damage but you have a bunch of bent/damaged fins there all over the place.

Yeah I was wondering that too as it does look kind of mangled. I honestly think that is from daily driving it the past year and a half. I'm curious how the oil coolers look on other m240s that have been driven for a fair amount of miles. Perhaps this is normal wear and tear?

Does a EU spec car with the "ZTK" package (19" wheels, bigger brakes, extra cooling etc.) also come with this floor mounted oil cooler?
I wonder how BMW didn't think about any protection of a floor mounted radiator, because this looks ridiculous. I hope you manage to fix it with as little hassle as possible. |

I thought the same when I saw the picture. Wonder if concrete parking curbs have been hit while parking? And then there's the concrete parking curbs that have rebar poking straight up through holes to hold the parking curb in place, and that could be disastrous if pulling too far forward.

There's no way this engine costs $35K...no way it even costs half that.
I also doubt the engine is hurt. If you did indeed pull over as soon as the car told you to, I'm sure you're fine. |

I think I will be adding a oil cooler bypass for just such a problem so I can make it home

Not sure, but if you hit something hard enough it still might damage the cooler. There is not much room between the two. Adding a few washers at the back will help. I will check on the front mount and report back. Not saying this won't help I do believe is will help.

So..... I didn't want to have to worry about investing in one of the Turner plates (much less the DIY mesh craftwork), but I think this thread has now changed my mind. That said, I am happy to hear that other have gone many thousand miles with no damage. Colorado roads though - much like our climate - are a complete crapshoot.

I would be very careful adding washers to the front. The screws are special for plastic and you are screwing into plastic. You will need longer screws. This is another issue time will tell and that is will these screws hold up for the weight of the skid plate. I need to look into this further if you could use a bolt and nut but not sure if this can be gone easily. It is too hot here in Houston to investigate this.

Regarding the front bolts, I'm hoping I can use other hardware. Perhaps Turner was just trying to make the install easy and "use factory hardware" as a selling point. Worst case scenario I can mount the mesh on the bottom/outer side of the skid plate and only need room 'inside' for flat machine screw heads. |

I called Mishimoto today to inquire about any plans for this skid plate being offered for the G42, but nothing yet. I prefer this design over the Turner, as it (appears) to offer greater protection.
I'm just not thrilled about spending $400 on the Turner and still having 4 large unprotected squares. My luck will be that's where the strike will occur. https://www.mishimoto.com/bmw-g80-m3...late-2021.html |

XC3LLR8 yeah that one looks nice, it sucks there's no ETA on it yet and I'm getting more nervous with the oil cooler being naked lately.
The stainless mesh I bought is really sturdy, as long as I can get it secured, it should protect the majority of what that one would. |
