There's a very real chance of Mexico built cars priced way lower than German imports in the near future. If that happens, everyone will be very happy that SLP and Spartanburg exist.

As long as all of the parts are German made, I see no problem with assembly in Mexico.

The terrible truth is that the cars assembled in Germany source their parts from all over the world. Besides other German suppliers, there's a bunch of Eastern European countries, China, Japan, and yes, Mexico too.

A terrible truth but not an argument to accept a German car being manufactured somewhere else. You get what you pay for and that includes manufacturers. If it were a logical rationalization then we mind as well accept all parts (even the more important parts) to be made in another country.

i'm very happy with my Japanese Toyota Tundra being manufactured in Texas by non-union labor with a higher domestic parts content than Ford or GM trucks.
my M2? well, i guess i'm just old fashioned but i'll expect it to be made in Germany unless they plan on lowering prices by 30%. the one caveat being if M2 manufacturing moves to mexico is if individual exterior and interior options are offered at reasonable fee. a British Racing Green M2CS with Cognac interior and polished 763's would make things interesting for me. |

I was planning to buy a next-gen M2, but I won't if my only option is to buy one that is made in Mexico. What a shame that will be.

Country of manufacture doesn't really matter to me. If the car is well engineered, then it will likely be a good car. Maybe it's because I worked in Germany for a German company, but I don't see why you think a German union employee is going to wield a torque wrench with any sort of magic skill set than a similarly trained employee in another country is going to. And yes, what you described is xenophobia to a t. |
