I would suggest that those who get tired of seeing the same thing posted repeatedly simply stop replying to those posts. But then again, if you do feel the need to post ---> , try posting a link to a related topic that has already been posted.

However, I guess there will always be those who feel the need to keep thier post count up by simply posting "search" several times a day.

One thing that has bothered me is the way board members attack others for not searching before asking questions. There are several reasons NOT to search before asking a question.

First, the last time the question was answered may have been a long time ago. Thus, new information may be available, such that the answer to the question is now different. For example, a new study has been done and it says that Brand X of oil is best for BMWs. If this study had not been done the last time someone asked, “What oil is best for my BMW?” then current inquirers wouldn’t have this new information if they only relied on old threads. Similarly, there are constantly new members with new opinions joining the board. Why should I limit myself to old posts that have fewer board members participating? It makes sense to ask the same question to new people. When US presidential elections occur, we ask each candidate what he or she thinks about immigration and health care, although these topics have been thoroughly discussed before. Why should it be otherwise on this board?

Second, searching is inefficient. There may be 20 different posts about the question I have. I’m a law student, and I don’t have the time to sift through 20 different posts. This is particularly true because many members post unrelated material in the threads, making it even harder to find the information I’m looking for. Why should I go through all of this extra reading when I can just re-ask the question, which then gives me new answers and/or allows a knowledgeable member to link me to the best of the prior 20 threads addressing my question?

Third, re-asking a question does not impose a high cost on anyone. I know some of you get annoyed, but objectively, some of your reactions are overboard. If the topic header says, “How Often Should I Change My Oil?” then don’t open it. You know the topic has been beaten to death (see, e.g., the icon of the horse being beaten), so why waste your time opening it, reading it, and then sarcastically responding to it? You could have just skipped over it after reading the title and continued to browse topics that interest you. You made the choice to waste your own time by engaging the poster.

Fourth, new members may not know they can search through old topics. As is the case in criminal law, you can’t punish someone for something they’re not on notice of.

I dislike the idea of having my first post be “controversial.” But I also dislike the idea of my first post merely introducing myself. You’ve all offered me some information, so I’ll try to do the same in the form of a thought out opinion.

Thanks for reading.
WTF??
I would like to se a forum made of students form your law school.
Have fun here wannabe law man. Somehow i doubt things will go the way you wish.

yep. You're a lawyer. Only a lawyer would write such a post, let alone start such a topic.

You are definitely still in law school.

Good luck with the job search (if you don't already have one) and getting your bimmer.

There is nothing of value in this thread(or topic) that could possibly be used for a search in future reference.(except for noted below)

And actually, if you search for threads dealing with searching as the theme, youll find a lot of them.

it's simple... If you think it's a repost or thinks it's a stupid post... just don't click on the thread. Why would you go in and say "REPOST" or "SEARCH"?

Because some people want to jack up their post count or already posted the same thing themselves? I bet that's usually the case.

I bet it's hard to find previous posts posing this same argument. The search of 'repost' would bring up half of the threads.

Welcome, and stop complaining.

Admittedly, I'm not seeing how me being a lawyer makes me more likely to address this topic.

I believe he is characterizing lawyers as as having a tendency to avoid work personally, requiring it to be done by others.

But I don't want to misconstrue.

We have only established that you have this tendency.

If seeking efficiency is tantamount to "having a tendency to avoid work personally," then I'm guilty. One who claims lawyers have a tendency to avoid work clearly hasn't been to law school. I wouldn't wish this amount of work on anyone.

Off-Topic posts don't count. His thread was originaly posted in the General section and he only posted in this thread. The thread was moved to the Off-Topic section.

Actually, isn't it possible that, once having graduated and passed the bar, the effort expended for law school gives way?

I certainly understand the validity of your experience - however, my experience of lawyers - graduated lawyers who have passed the bar - is that they don't do any more work than they have to themselves.

A fun, old post.

My response to you (with all due respect) is that it appears you're working with subpar lawyers. My colleagues kill themselves working round the clock everyday, including holidays. They go above and beyond to make sure our clients win, which is why we have a stellar track record. And yes, we delegate when it makes sense to do so, because that cuts clients' bills without sacrificing quality. But I would not characterize that as doing as little work as possible.

Holy thread revival, this is back from around 3 years ago....

And you say a reason to NOT search first is because there may be new information available?

....Why not search first to see whether or not the information is old or not, and THEN choose whether or not to repeat the question? Still means you should search first. Just saying.

"we delegate to cut our clients bills"...OMFG that was funny...dreamworld...anyone who has ever dealt with legal firms knows that they indeed delegate work to the underlings but the bill wont reflect that....

Not many professionals work on a % hehe.

I too just might charge 300.00 hr to talk with me but unlike many lawyers I know, I already know I will burn in hell....

If there was no reposting any new information would be put into one dedicated thread. There would not be 20 threads for you to go through when you search as there are no reposts. There are two ways to look at it

I just graduated with a B.A in business. Let me some it up for you:

Reasons not to search first:

I'm getting a 3 series.

First, the last time the question was answered may have been a long time ago.

Second, searching is inefficient.

Third, re-asking a question does not impose a high cost on anyone.

Fourth, new members may not know they can search through old topics.

I'm different.

Thanks for reading.

hope you don't take it seriously, just me having some fun. Welcome to the forums and grats on graduating!

I agree with you, except

A lot of people post when the SAME topic is on the first page. I understand, and I agree with you about searching.

However, when someone makes a post and 2-5 threads down its the same topic, then thats the OP's fault and he should get flammed
