A Roth IRA really has no impact on how much car you should buy. General rule of thumb is no more than 20% of your take home pay should go towards a car payment + insurance. Or another rule of thumb is no more than 10% of your gross monthly income. So if you make $60K, then your monthly car payment + insurance should be no more than $500.

And your loan shouldn't be longer than 4 years or so. If you take a 84 month loan, you're going to upside down pretty quickly and stay there. These rules apply pretty much in all situations, even if you don't have a mortgage or rent payment and even if you have a large cash cushion. I'd argue that they're a little generous especially if you don't have much of a cash cushion.

FWIW, asking on any car enthusiast forum is going to get you a very skewed answer. Lots of guys here spend way over common sense limits on their car simply because they love cars. Lots of guys who can barely make their car payment are modding them. Just look at the classifieds and see how many ads are from people who need cash because something "came up". And then notice the stuff their selling is worth a few hundred dollars at the most.

So any car enthusiast site is probably not going to be great for actual financial advice on cars. You're going to get guys who make $30K with $0K in investments, no Roth IRA or any retirement account, a 3 day cash cushion willing to buy a $50K car with $0 down and an 84 month loan.
This is exactly what I'm looking for. Compare and contrast is the only way to pull your own true consensus. Sure google has lots of answers and opinions on this topic but 99% of these are based on people who DO NOT love their cars. Just as u states the % rules I would ask the question if you would consider spending you luxury money on your car a reasonable decision if you don't shop, or do recreational activities besides enjoying your car.

Thank you for the valuable information btw!

I consider cars as part of my hobby and therefore combined with all my automobiles, repairs, mods, insurance it's going to be more than "what it should be"

However, if one of my cars needs an expensive repair I don't have to fix it until I have the money to do so.

and yeah I'd just get the car you want, finance and do whatever you can to be able to afford it within reason

Are they private or public student loan? If they are public loans, do you work for the government?

If your face to face then yes, but on an online forum? If someone on here asked how much you (P1et) specifically had, then it's too personal. That's what I meant. My wording sometimes isn't clear enough.

Wait what? 250k? A 328 fully loaded goes to 50k now a days. You do not get as much bang for the buck for 50k compared to 5 or 10 years ago.

Obviously $250k doesn't mean much without background information such as savings, 401k, etc., but you get my idea. $250k before taxes, so let's say $200k, give or take a few, afterwards, and that's 25% of your salary that you're spending on a car. I'm thankful that I have the means to purchase these cars, but if I didn't, I wouldn't be spending so much on cars.

I thought you were being transparent?

So tell me how you're going to afford a down payment on not one but two properties and a new BMW with your "example" scenario.

I hear lenders in the USA are used to giving money out, but not for 2 houses and a BMW to people who have 58M (student loan, car) unsecured loans, 6M in assets and make 80M a year.

You seem to just be pissing money away...renting, buying a BMW to say look at me look at me...you're like the male version of Sara504

Do what you think is right, but the government is NEVER going to forgive your student loan. Keep paying the minimum payment, sure high utilization never hurts a person's credit bureau right?

At the end of the day you came her asking for information, don't get sour when people reply with what you need to hear as opposed to what you wanted to hear.

Best of luck at learning how to win a life!

My wife and I pay for our cars with cash and still won't buy a $50k car. My limit right now is less than $40k cars.

I recommend you spend time deciding what your long term goals are and figuring out how you will get there and less time worrying about what the "average" person would do. My goal is to be able to retire in my early to mid 50's (not sure I want to but want the ability to).

I think the average person makes a lot of bad decisions and I sure wouldn't make my personal decisions based on random peoples opinions.
