I need a new, cheaper, fun car.

Several cars come to mind for the money and need you're looking for:

Mazdaspeed 3 - not red
Evo - if you don't get the MR they're not too pricey and manual gearbox
new Camaro - V8 for $30K or the V6 for $25K
Mini Cooper S - so much fun and great gas mileage (quality may be an issue)
GTI - tons of room and a lot of fun for $21K
Pontiac G8 - V8 for $30K
RX8 - definitely won't get the fuel mileage you're looking for, but great chassis
E46 M3 - best deal of the bunch for a very capable car

05-07 STI, NO DOUBT if your looking for "FUN"

personally i hate the evo... the windows are just tooo damn tall.. overall the car looks funny... the sti at least looks good imo
