Are you supposed to reach into the bowl and take the water dish out, then fill it and put it back, while the spider is watching you with all those eyes, waiting for its chance to strike?

You are so right on this. He's very gentle, and just wants to be around people. He often falls asleep with his (giant) head in my lap. But boy do they have health issues....

I've gotten my mind to overcome the instinct to abhor snakes, but never had the same ability with big hairy spiders. There is no rationalization about them being more afreared of me that helps.
