TJZ67201 To clarify, did your parcel shelf work reduce some of the noise? I know you still have some "thump" going on, but what you added for padding/isolation, did it do any good at all?
For me, I have some hollow sounding noises over some bumps, and it sounds more like suspension or something under that car. That noise bothers me less. The one noise that does bother me is the plastic tapping noise over some bumps that unsettle the rear end (usually big frost heaves). It kind of sounds like if your passenger seatbelt hits the B pillar, but that's not the problem. Leaning my head back and listening to the rear makes it sound like it comes from the rear, likely C pillar or parcel shelf. I tried the pool noodle stuffing trick, but it made zero difference. My yearly oil change will be due in 3 months. I don't know that I'm going to tear the rear apart before then, so I think I'll have the dealer look at it when I bring it in. This is knowing I have zero faith they'll fix it. If it ends up being unresolved by the dealer afterward, I may be motivated enough to take the rear apart piece by piece to isolate the issue. First the bolsters, then door card panels, then C pillars, then the parcel shelf. I'll probably load it up with felt tape and foam upon reinstallation.- |

Regarding the suspension thump, adding the sound deadening to the rear parcel shelf only ended up reducing the noise about less than 10%. I also added sound deadening material underneath the rear seat bench, directly over where the gas tank sits under the seats. This reduced the thump about another 10 percent as well, but I can still hear it without a doubt. So that makes me believe the origin of the noise has to be the suspension. The car is actually quiet a bit quieter with the additional deadening, almost too quiet because I no longer have to shut my exhaust valves when cruising on the highway. Back to the thumping noise, overall it has been reduced VERY slightly in my opinion with the sound deadening. This helps, but my ears are fine tuned to sounds of this frequency, especially when driving and it still drives me crazy in these colder months. Now that it’s been getting warmer again in Chicago, the noise is not as prominent and more livable. I really love this car, but if there is not a resolution by the next cold season, I might consider trading it in… My plan is: Unless there is an official fix before then or the sound gets any worse, I will be taking my car in for its next free oil change in Oct/Nov of 2024. My dealer said they will open a case with BMWNA for additional investigation since I have already brought it in twice with a paper trail and they have already replaced RR suspension without any luck. |

For me, noises are bothersome because I honestly expect better of the cars I buy. I get that they'll make noises after some time, but a few have acted up quite early on. I have been in a number of older vehicles that seem to make fewer extraneous noises, I'm rather disappointed that my 75K CAD car is MUCH worse than my wife's 40K CAD CX-30. Sure, I have a much better engine, trans and chassis, plus it's a coupe, but still, it shouldn't be worse than a car based on a base model worth less than 30K CAD. That is only one example.
Over the years, I have dumped my factory ordered 2015 Mustang, 2018 Stinger, and I got pretty fed up with my F22 M240i (2020) as well. The F22 held up the best though, I had a couple good quiet years before the A-pillar popping plagued it. I wouldn't have kept it due to the way it was going downhill, but I also traded in early for my G42 due to the market's ridiculous trade-in allowances. I've narrowed down my OCD on rattles to either some type of brain problem, or the fact I've had new cars so long that have no "real" issues like engine troubles, so I'm just finding something wrong with it I guess. Considering all the cars I've gotten rid of for noises, either this car smartens up and shuts up, or once the lease is done, I'm going back to used cars. At least then they have some miles and I won't expect them to be perfect. Also, that will get me out of perpetual car payments. It's that, or hypnotherapy. I've quite seriously been thinking about it...I have a problem...lol. Back to the topic, when I bring mine in (in about 3 months), I'll see what the dealer can do. If anything, I'll definitely report back. Don't hold your breath though, we have some real winner techs around here. |

My right rear strut/shock were recently replaced; after a test drive the tech stated the noise was still there; another associated part was replaced and no more right rear end noise; didn't realize how bad it was; I can give you the part numbers if you are interested.
