I have kind of the same questions. Is coding out ASD really necessary when we can just turn it off with a button, or program it to be off when we press the M1/M2 buttons? And, are all the burbles fake?

Thanks.

It is not the same as M Sound (the button). This button does not fully disable the fake engine noise that comes through the speakers. The only way to fully disable that is to code it out.

That said, once coded out the M Sound will control the burbles. I love that this can be turned off. I find it obnoxious with a midpipe and valve controller, so prefer it off.

So if I'm hearing you correctly, the burbles are real, not just fabricated by ASD, and in fact even with ASD coded out, they can be quite loud with a midpipe and the valves open?

I don't have a midpipe or a valve controller, but I had to code out ASD after installing the Alpha 1 amplifier, because ASD became unbearable due to the increased power of the amp. After coding out ASD, in my experience here's what I can confirm:
  • In non-M mode, no more fake engine noise at all. Pressing the "Exhaust" button on the console has absolutely no effect at all.
  • In either M1 or M2 mode, with M Sound "On", or by turning it On with the "exhaust" button, I get louder (tolerable) exhaust sound and burbles.

In M1 or M2 mode, it seems that turning M Sound On/Off in the settings, and using the "exhaust" button to manually turn it On/Off does the same thing, at least audibly.

Hope this is helpful.

That is correct. Burbles and bangs are real deal in Sport/+, even without ASD.

Factory warranty

Sorry for the noob question but would turning off ASC via coding void the factory warranty?

Any update on this? I just put an amp in the car to power the speakers and now ASD rattles my subs. I followed the steps above and did the expert settings, hit code, then backed out and ASD is still shaking the car. What am I missing?

Figured it out, you have to click on the 3 dots at the top of the screen for your options and hit activation codes, then deactivate the one for ASD. After that everything turned off and the center console button and M sound options both open or close the valves in the exhaust for a little more sound. Glad I got that taken care of.

I noticed in iDrive 8 on my 230i there’s a checkbox to turn off iconic sounds in drive settings. Isn’t this essentially the same thing as turning off ASD?

No, it will not void the factory warranty; along with most other things you can code with Bimmercode. If you get future firmware updates to the car, it will most likely wipe these settings and you have to re-apply them.

I’ve heard the M240 and other non-M cars have a different setup that can be fully disabled with a toggle in the menus (called Iconic sounds), and it’s persistent. Why they make us G87 owners go through all this coding crap is beyond me.

"Iconic Sounds" is not the same as ASD and there is still all the same coding hurdles to shut off ASD on the 240.

"Iconic Sounds" enables/disables lift off burbles and upshift engine noises, both in the ECU tune and in the ASD sound that plays in the speakers.

Shutting off the ASD does not change the "Iconic Sounds" behavior with the actual engine/exhaust.

I am hoping to kill "iconic sounds" and ASD permanently.
