Somehow no one mentioned A Fistful of Dynamite (Duck, You Sucker) with James Coburn.
Or The Treasure of Sierra Madre with Bogart.

The Outlaw Josey Wales, 1976, Eastwood stars and directs.
Geronimo: An American Legend,1993, loosely based on events leading up to the 1886 surrender of Geronimo.

This isn’t a western at all — but has similar themes of exploring new territories, showing an enormous amount of grit and toughness.
Watch “Endurance” on the Disney channel |

Oh gosh...
Lots of westerns suggested and good suggestions too. I'll offer non westerns films. Humphrey Bogart: Certainly The Maltese Falcon. To Have and Have Not. There others but the titles escape me. Journey To the Center of the Earth. The one from IIRC 1959 with James Mason, Arlene Dahl, Pat Boone. The remake (2008) with Brendon Frazer is pretty good, too. Forbidden Planet. Little Shop of Horrors. Young Frankenstein. Whole bunch of older horror movies: Dracula (with Belo Lugosi), Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, Invisble Man, Dr. Jykell Mr. Hyde. Werewolf. The Blob. (1958 and 1988 are the ones I remember seeing.) The Body Snatchers (1978) but I think there is one the came before and another one that came after (1993?). I know I saw the 1978 film. Maybe too intense/unsuitable for younger viewers: Carrie. The Exorcist. The Superman movies. And Batman movies. I've not seen all of them but the first couple of both series were good. The Great Escape. I could go on but I'll stop. |

The Cowboys - Bruce Dern became known as "the man who killed John Wayne". Dern was the first to kill Wayne in a western. He said he received a lot of hate mail about how they allowed Wayne's character to die.
Jubal - Good storyline and an equally good cast, that also includes Charles Bronson in his fifth year as an actor.

Not a traditional western, but was enjoyable. Also, has Omar Sharif, but I feel the Pinto Horse is the actual star of the movie.
