I wouldn't worry about the brand snobs that rip on the STi and Evo. No shit it's not a BMW, Merc or Audi quality interior. There's a reason it has M3 rivaling performance and costs a lot less money...certain things are going to suffer to make that happen. Otherwise the Germans wouldn't have much of an argument for their pricing.

I actually like the looks of the new STi. I think when it's done up properly it looks really aggressive. I would consider one for sure. As said above your brother should also drive the Evo. I had an VIII and it is still my favorite car to date (even more then my bimmers, sacrilege I know). I don't think the X suites me as much as the VIII did though. It's lost a little of the functionality (trunk and rear seat room) that made the VIII and IX's such great cars. Definitely drive both and go from there.

What are CPO'd ISFs going for? Has he looked at those?

I doubt that a lot of people can afford 800+ per month for a car let alone highschoolers. No wonder why the economy is so messed up in the states judging from forums a lot of 18-19-20 y/o kids are driving cars they have no business driving(i.e The evo/sti are classified as boy racers). One of my friend's is 33 with 3 kids (7,5,new born not even a month old) still wears DC Shoes has an ATV and bought an EVO X last year as a reward for all these years of hard work before that he couldn't afford it.

My post wasn't to disrespect you but just expressing my point of view.
No offense taken, just giving my POV. My parents were not rich (I make more than them already) but I come from a rich community so I saw A LOT of kids with those cars. I see some college kids with them as well, and almost no adults.

If he was buying a car like that to mod and such (rims and drop are not real mods) then go for it, hell, I still get a kick out of modified Civics ever since I owned one. He is buying a wanna-be M3 instead of buying CPO or just saving for the car he really wants. That is something a kid would do.

If you are paying over $700 a month for an STI or EVO there is something wrong (unless it is <5 year loan). I don't even pay that much for my BMW that I bought brand new (with almost no down payment).

p.s. What do DC shoes have anything to do with this? That is about style more than anything, and he is not looking at the EVO or STI for style points obviously since he really wants a BMW. And the ATV makes no sense either, mature people have toys like that so I think that was a counter productive remark for the point you were trying to get across.

he said 750/yr. As in $750 a year for insurance. not a car payment

I understand but put it this way where I live I'm considered rich. Most of the people drive Corolla-Civic etc.
If you go on the subaru canada website with 0 down the STI comes up at
808,64 $/60 months 987,27/48 months. Let alone gas at 1.25 per liter which is about 5.00/gallon. About 2000-3000 a year insurance premiums. That's why I don't consider those cars as childish since we pay about 40-50% income tax here. I forgot about 13% taxes on every purchase you make. You need to be fortunate in life to drive one of these. If I was in the states I would be driving a 911 you guys are lucky you get good incentives all the time(financing, cash back etc).

That's gotta suck, I got mine for $29,500 new with 0% financing for 63 months and pay $750 a year in insurance. I'd have to drive a used car in Canada

I'm an ex-WRX owner and I would lean to the Evo over the STI just because the boxer 4 engine is a pain in the ass to work on. Everything from changing spark plugs, adding an up-pipe, swapping turbos, and injectors are a total chore. I can't speak for the Evo X, but the previous models were much easier to work on...not to mention their aftermarket support is better (and cheaper) then the suby market as well.

The new Evo's are going for serious discounts.

holy shit

Yeah the looks have grown on me. I say go for it, it's pretty sexy but you won't have the M3 refinement.

But you will have the practicality of a hatchback. But yes the insurance is said to be expensive :/

Would I personally wait for a 2nd hand M3... probably. But it's tempting.

seriously i have to point out that i thought this car was fugly beyond belief when I first saw it. Now it looks better every time. Pretty good move for Subaru moving to hatch... who woulda fuckin thought.

GTI is screwed now too.

wow

That is L-Schlegs STi Even you die hard M3 fans have to admit this is a pretty bad ass little car. They are going for like $29k brand new nicely trimmed, and even these exterior mods + wheels to make the car look like L's would run no more than $5k, plus some good engine mods and exhaust throw in another $5k, and you have an all wheel drive car with 350+hp for around $40k total, with a 5year 100,000 mile warranty. Not too bad for the price.

if your on a budget I suggest going into an Evo X. It is cheaper to modify and they make a lot of power with very little money.

Wait doesn't the warranty go out the door once the mod begins?

I would think so. Maybe not with exterior mods but with the engine.

Also, Subaru is a 3-year basic and then 5-year powertrain. Not the best. Isn't BMW's about the same.

i would not get a STI...i'd go with a plain old WRX. why...because the normal WRX is faster and cheaper than the STI.

this is from car and driver...

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
Base Price: $25,690
0-to-60-mph time: 4.7 sec
Quarter-mile time: 13.5 sec @ 102 mph

Highs: Amazing acceleration, minimal turbo lag, smooth ride, high refinement factor.
Lows: Smooth ride a little too soft in the corners, vague steering.

The Verdict: Quicker than its big brother, the STI, and it’s $10,000 less. That’s what we call a bargain.

After that well...you need to change brakes, wheels etc and it will get out of control. Been there done that.

You can use that same argument on so many cars. Why buy a Corvette Z06 for $70k, just buy a base Vette for $45k and add supercharge and better brakes etc... for much less. Same with ZR-1, just buy the Z06 for $35k less, and for half that extra money can have a car with 650hp.

Porsche is the same too, just buy the cheaper model and mod it to be faster than the Turbo model for less money.

i dont know what you're talking about. those numbers i posted are for a stock WRX. its cheaper than a STI and its faster....stock. you're talking about buying a cheaper model and modding it. the WRX is the cheaper model but no modding needed...its already faster than a STI
