No, I fully understand that you have US funds available in the US.

What I'm saying is that when you hit the border, Customs doesn't care how you paid for the car. They will be charging you the GST, P/HST, and Duty all based on the CDN dollar value of your US purchase.

Therefore, when they calculate the 5%, 7% and then the 6.1% on top of that total, it will be based on the CDN dollar value.

With the CDN dollar being worth 0.95 US dollars. It means on an $80K USD car:

$80 000 US purchase price = $84 000 CDN

7% (assuming PST) = $5880

5% GST = $4200

Subtotal = $94 080

Duty (6.1%) = $5738.88

Total taxes = $15 818.88 CDN

So even if you pay the entire amount in US cash up front, you will be required to hand over $15 818.88 at the Canadian border plus the A/C fee and filing fee. It still may be worth it depending on the car and what it's value is up here. A good example is a used, late model 911 TT. There are so few available up here (ie. a half dozen or so) that they hold they're value ridiculously well. The inventory is just so much deeper down south that the US purchases are typically still cheaper when you factor in the government taxes.

Hrmmm... I never knew that. I guess I'll have a bit more research to do if I do end up finding a model I like in the US. I know the Americans get the best automobile deals around. The price difference gets bigger and bigger up here for each model number you go up. I think I remember seeing the 7 series up here being $50,000 more compared to the US counterpart. That might still be worth it!

When I had ~100K to spend on a car some years ago. I knew exactly what I wanted. I didn't need other folk's opinions to make my decision. If one is a car guy/gal, buying a "weekend" car is not about practicality, it is about passion.

$100K cars are not investments, the subsequent depreciation is wallet wrenching. If it isn't for the passion, why bother? I keep this quote handy when I start thinking seriously about a car purchase - just to keep myself honest.

Pretty much this criteria! Something practical, stylish, supercar-esque, but won't look like a second consideration next to say, an Audi R8 or Maserati coupe. I think the M5 would have difficultly being on that level. But I think the CLS would be comfortable there. Plus I love that new overhaul Benz did on the 2012 version, wow!

The S7 I guess (MY 2013). Isn't that supposed to be under $100k? I saw the pics of an A7 before I saw one in person and I thought it looked horrid. However, seeing one in person was totally different. I'm not a fan of much of the Audi exterior styling lately, but this one catches my attention. It's not as fast as the CLS AMG, but should be in your price range new, at least.

I've seen these in person and the back-end is not my cup of tea, mmm... The front looks fabulous though! Does the S-version change anything noticeably on the back?

No, not as far as I can tell from the shots at Frankfurt.

It could really use a flush deck lid spoiler though. That's the only part of the car I don't like, that transition from the horizontal to vertical on the back end.
