Elsa was our first Samoyed, a rescue. She never completely submitted to my authority. She would growl & put her teeth on me, but never to hurt me, only to say.... "you just tall, that's just about all".

My dog knows I'm an introvert/homebody

If he sees me getting dressed, he trots off to his crate assuming I must be going out

Samoyed's aren't bear size though despite the camera angle you use though right? Aren't they slightly smaller than a Lab? And I thought they were generally pretty friendly? Do I have them confused with another breed?

You are pretty much spot on. Although the working breeds don't have a hard limit on size, Samoyed males are recommended to top out at ~60lb, females a bit smaller. Elsa was ~60lb, Little Bear was ~72lb, & Onslow ~60lb. English Labs can be as small, but the American ones are generally a little bigger.
They are very good with people, having been developed by Inuits who treated them as family. We often characterize them as 'half Golden Retriever' because they are so good with children (the Eskimos probably had the Samoyed herding children). Being pack animals, they can be a little contentious with other dogs, but being work dogs, they tend not to damage the other dog (a damaged dog makes no money...). Because the humans couldn't have lived so far north without the dog, Samoyeds had to do anything the people could make them do (herd, hunt, guard, pull...) Thus, they are very smart.
When they did the doggie genome they found the Samoyed to be the closest breed to a wolf. This is evident every time we bring them to the woods; they are still very primal & understand the environment.
So, half Golden Retriever & half Wolf?

Very nice dog. Very friendly. And a very handsome specimen.

Apparently, in the dog's previous ownership, it was destined for dog shows. The previous owner had some kind of vocal chord surgery to reduce the dog's barking. So, now the dog has an odd sort of horse/whispery bark.

When they let the fur grow for winter, he is an impressive ball of fluff.

Um, not as. But I have no need to know. Whatever turns them on! (I know my mom had questions about my sexual behaviors, & I was "normal" (sort of)!)
