When you become a cliche.

2024 is my 65th year of existence on this rock, so of course I started on Medicare, making me officially a senior citizen. Has barely been a week and today I slipped getting into the shower. How's that for a cliche?

"Newly minted senior citizen slips in shower"

Luckily I was holding onto a bar my brother installed last year, so I didn't fall. But I managed to slam my shin on the side of the bathtub. Now I have a huge goose egg on my shin that hurts like hell. I swear, I'm living proof of Murphy's Law.

Old enough Medicare assumes you're statistically much more likely to die from something else than from colon cancer would be my best guess.

Speaking of....

I did my last one completely awake with no meds.

Worst part was they still set an IV and poked me 4 times.

The actual process was super easy and a total non issue.

My doc had a great sense of humor...picture a handsome Sikh, turban and all...saying...."And now I take you on a tour of your colon!"

Got to watch the whole thing and it was fascinating! Saw the entrance to the small intestine, the opening to the appendix, a polyp getting snared as well as the full tour....One little one so five year for me.

I'd NEVER get meds again for this.

There is no way that I am going to quit getting colonoscopies just to satisfy some AI driven Medicare stats. intended to cut costs. I have lost two friends to colon cancer and through word of mouth (you know all of us old farts talk endlessly about this shit), know of many more. It's a really bad disease, and people who have been diagnosed with late stage do not have a good outlook.

If diagnosed in an early stage the prognosis is generally good with treatment. Regular colonoscopies are how colon cancer is found in an early stage. Without colonoscopies cancer will not be noticed until it has advanced to a very late stage, and the person is in very bad trouble.

Foregoing future colonoscopies is not a good idea regardless of what Medicare my say.

Yep, I agree. Last one was in 2023 and a benign polyp was found so it is recommended I get another one in 5 years, which I will do. Such an easy procedure (the prep's not much fun) why would anyone not do this when the alternative could mean death? It doesn't make sense not to get it done. If I live long enough to where I get to the age that Medicare recommends that I don't get one, I'll still do it, even if I have to pay for it myself.

I am hoping that this foolish idea doesn't get codified into the statutes. It would result in more deaths among the elderly. Many people are not in a financial situation to be able to afford to do it on their own.

Not to get all "pizzagatey", but I sometimes wonder if the Guvmint bean counters at times look at thinning the herd as a way of reducing service demand. Too many movies?

Anyway, I have discussed this with my Gastro Guy who is also a close friend. He seems to think that this will not become mandatory. He says that if it passes, it will also come with a bunch of medical "exceptions" that can be massaged by a doctor with a conscience. He also told me that no matter what, he will be scoping things out until he attends my funeral.

This is true. I'd say most people couldn't afford to pay for it on their own. Let's start a petition to make the mandatory cut off age something like 150 before they stop paying for it.

Tbh, and more serious, I think we’ll be able to get a colonoscopy as long as we are alive and need one. At least that is my hope.

We had to bum a ride to the beach (Avila Beach) during high school days and felt lucky if we got a ride... even luckier if we got a ride home!

But it was well worth the trouble. One of my friends had an unbelievable girlfriend, Barbie Doll in proportions. We pitched a lot of tents in those days.

No, we had many of the "Harvest" colors over the years but they were all in rentals. The one exception was my current house which we bought in 1984. The existing appliances were Harvest Gold. Since we were already accustomed to these colors over the previous 25 years, and we were living frugally (AKA on the cheap), the kitchen remained as is until Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The entire interior of the house had to be gutted and rebuilt. Et voila, welcome to the 21st century.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Went there on July 4 to watch the fireworks show when I was a little kid. 💥

One time when I went there was an exhibition game with the Dodgers. Don’t remember the other team. Afterwards was the fireworks display.
