When I was a kid, we had a milk man deliver to our house every few days. (Get off my lawn!) One of the things that he brought was orange juice in quart-sized paper cartons, and I used to drink it all the time and even in my school lunchbox Thermos. (Glass liner, get off my lawn.) It was sweet, not bitter.

These days, I really don't like many of the name brand bottled OJ because it is bitter. We were buying some Florida brands, but they are all using concentrate from Brazil and Mexico because of frost damaging Florida's groves. As a result, they too are now bitter.

Long story short, my DW went to Aldi last week and bought a bottle of their OJ brand. It doesn't say where they are getting their oranges from, but it just as good as the stuff the milk man used to deliver decades ago!

Of course, my sugar is totally out of control this month, so I can only take a small sip of it.....

We had a milkman, too. My Dad once had an accident at work and broke his leg. While he was laid up, we were hurting for money. We sat in front of the TV at night watching Batman or The Green Hornet and pieced together those pointy pens you find in desk sets. That brought in some extra funds. During that time, our milkman waived off the payments for the milk. My Mom used to tell me they owed him $200 at one point. That was a lot of money back then. More than two weeks of take home pay for my Dad. He let my folks slowly pay him back over time. That type of customer service is a very rare thing these days.

It's rare because most people today would never even try to pay it back.

We used to have a butcher that came around every couple of weeks in a covered pick-up truck. He always had at least a quarter of beef and side of hog hanging in the back and would cut whatever you wanted while you watched. He used a balance beam scale similar to this to tally up what you bought. He also always had a bone or two to keep the dogs busy while he worked.

Aldi's pulp free orange juice is the only orange juice that my wife and I drink. Been the best tasting we have found and not to bitter. Tastes better than some of the brand names.
Also, the price is right.

Florida’s Natural with Pulp in the carton is my favorite. To me it tastes very close to fresh squeezed.

My wife doesn't like it either. Never has it. She uses a non-dairy creamer in her coffee. I use the milk I drink in my coffee.

Speaking of milk delivery, I also vaguely remember bread delivery. I think that stopped when I was quite young -- mid-1950s? We got mild delivery up until the late '50s or maybe 1960.

Yeah, I’d say we got milk delivered until the early 70s. I don’t recall getting it in glass bottles. We might have and I just don’t recall it. Seems like we might have gotten eggs, too.

Esteban, you need help!! That stuff is nasty!! It’s just water with some white chalk in it!!! I used to be a whole milk snob, but I had to change in the army and drink 2%. I still drink 2% and I like it just fine. I will say if the store happens to be out of 2% and I have to buy whole it doesn’t hurt my feelings.

Dude, you need serious help!!! So, you put white chalk water in your coffee?!?! That barely even changes the color, much less adds any flavor or texture. And it cools off the coffee!! My preference would probably be full fledged cream, but half and half is fine, but at home I use non-dairy, powdered creamer. I like coffee, but only doctored up. I use a lot of cream and sweetener. I even did that in the field in the Army. I can’t drink it black. Just to give you a sense of my sweetness preference, my Tennessee, southern sweet tea standard is if the spoon doesn’t stand up in the tea there’s not enough sugar! That’s why I use Splenda. If I used sugar I’d be diabetic for sure!!

Haha, you're funny. No cream, no half & half, fat free is fine for me. Been drinking it my whole adult life and it's perfectly suits my taste. Also the others are too thick for me. And I use Splenda as well. Different strokes...

Yeah! And there were no station buttons to push either. Just a tuning knob to twirl back and forth until you ended up with the least amount of static. And we liked it damnit!

Ours came in paper cartons back then.

There's a small regional dairy here that still sells milk in glass bottles at many grocery stores. Before anyone asks, there's a $3.00 deposit on each one so I can't pass along our empties.....
