It’s exactly this! People will do weird crap to avoid paying license/registration fees here in the states. What he’s doing is a felony in California. I have seen people manufacturer the new California paper plates to avoid detection (…see attached; it is completely fraudulent, but looks legitimate…..but notice the VIN font isn’t right).

I used to love pulling the plates and towing cars out of peoples driveways. When we got the MDT's it made searching plates so much easier. The owner usually was a suspended driver to boot.

Property taxes are paid each year for registered vehicles. So I thought maybe it was unregistered.

He had a Bentley that had out of state plates and an inspection sticker 6 years expired.

If police won't respond, try the code enforcement of the city/county. Illegal storage/repair of vehicles.

That's very different from the system we have in Canada to pay property taxes.

Here in California, as long as it's not parked on public roads, we can't really do anything about it (..and Code Enforcement will not do anything unless your front yard looks like an auto shop; a disabled/inoperable vehicle isn't enough to warrant any action from Code Enforcement, especially if the yard is tidy and the car is well kept or covered). As soon as it leaves private property it's ours.

This must vary from state to state. I do not believe that is the case here in California.

The Highway Terrific Act let us pull plates and tow cars anywhere we found them with the wrong plates. I always loved the weird statutes that seemed wrong but so right.

The method of assessing annual taxes on motor vehicles here in the States can vary quite a bit. In some states it will cost a fair amount each year to renew a vehicle's registration. In other states it will cost only a modest amount.

One fairly recent California governor got just a bit rambunctious in his assessment of what the state's citizens would tolerate and had a very promising political career ended prematurely. That governor went from "Hello, White House!" to looking for a job.

His mistake? Tripling already-high annual auto registration fees. That earned the governor the distinction of being the first in California history to have a recall attempt qualify for the ballot. He then went on to be recalled. Hello, Arnie!

Yep! Arnold lowered that auto registration fee significantly. The M3 I owned at the time went from having at $1000+ renewal rate to around $500. Sweet!

Speaking of renewals, I have owned the 992 about a year now and my renewal is $1200. Face palm!

I lived in the Golden State from '59 to '95 and have family and friends from all the way back to grade school there, so I'm familiar with the various ways the state has of collecting the funds it needs to keep functioning.

Annual registration fees here in SW Ohio are remarkably low. The last renewal for my 2017 M240i cost $129.95 for two years. After so many years in CA, I'm still like "Really, that's all you want?"

Damn! You have it so good in Ohio.

California loves to collect the money and rarely ever use it as intended.

I have no interest in hijacking the awesome thread, but I have to ask: Is your new car getting the attention from the ladies that I hear Porsches are known for? You may plead the 5th!

I know what to do when I see a sign "Watch for falling rocks" or "School zone" or "Reduce speed ahead" but what is a driver supposed to do for a (in Texas) sign, "Guardrail damage ahead"??

Digression accepted!

Honestly, I mainly drive it when me and my lady travel somewhere, so I haven't taken it out and paid much attention to how other ladies react to it. I do feel, however, if I used it for that purpose it would be an extremely effective tool.

LOL! Slow down......because somebody probably went off the edge due to excessive speed and/or the inability to navigate the curve (...presuming there is a curve in the road). I patrol a huge area which includes mountain terrain/canyons. It is not uncommon to have the Subaru STI/Mitsubishi EVO/etc. crowd up there ripping through the canyons..........sometimes at their own peril.

Curves not necessarily involved. Usually seen by exits/off ramps.

I saw a motor officer whose back license plate surround said, "Smile, I could be behind you."

AND, then as part of the reduction back to the original levels, he stopped 30+ year old vehicles from rolling off the list of needing smog checks. So anything newer than 1975 still has to get smogged every two years. So I can't replace the fuel injected 1600cc engine in my 77 Beetle with a NA 1776
