What kind of watch do you sport with your 3 series?

Anyway, if that's the case, you likely (and correct me if I'm wrong) had a caliber 3135 movement, which I think has been around for over 20 years. From my personal accounts, that particular movement has been bulletproof (as long as you send it in every few years for routine maintenance).

How are you estimating my age?

I don't have documentation. Just waht 2 different European watch specialists (1 in FL 1 in NY) had told me. They said it happens. It really put me off.

I'm not referring to your own documentation, I was just wondering if you had a website or article you can reference which documents such failures of the movement. It's more for my own edification, if anything else....not that I don't believe these two supposed specialist you've spoken with.

My Grandfather bought it for me when he was dying. It was the start to my watch collecting. I don't have documentation on hand. Kind of expected a watch that was only worn a few times in 5 years and serviced after the 3rd year to not seize. Especially a Rolex.

you bought it in '95, had it serviced in '98 and it "seized" in 2009? That's 11 years without a service. Even then something doesn't add up. My grandma's lady datejust is a 70's vintage... it may have been serviced once, she doesn't remember, and it STILL ticks. Granted, it loses like 2 hours per day, but still ticks lol. Why does she wear it? Sentimental reasons

It seized in 2002.

I agree. A rolex-caliber movement should not seize based on what you've mentioned. It must've been an exception (which is why there's a warranty). Unfortunately for you, you did not wear it frequently enough to discover the problem in time.

It was fixed and then I gave it to my father. I imagine I will get it once again when he passes.

Rolex appearance just isn't my style right now. I'm more into Breitling and Bvlgari these days.

Nice skyland, I had a black dial one as well. I used it on the PRO II and diver pro. That's one watch I regret selling, and probably will buy again soon
