No, but we (…collectively as a shift) chewed out a paramedic who thought it was prudent to record a Code 3 roll for social media likes while we were transporting a small child who was run over by the Rivian his mother was driving (..the child fell out of the car). The child was bordering on death imminent when me and my partners arrived, and later subsequently died at the trauma center. We did everything we could to give that child the best chances of survival, so to see the paramedic taking selfie videos for SM was just troubling.

There are considerations, but often we act without taking our own safety into account when we’re trying to save a life. It is a heroic act and I wish more people heeded that call. The fact that you even consider it despite your age and physical condition says a lot.

r.e. DUI enforcement, I'm curious why police do not just sit outside a bar and watch people slosh into their cars, then pull them over for it right after they drive off (like they do for drug sales) - is this just social/financial pressure from the bars or the chamber of commerce, or is there a procedural/legal issue?

What makes you think we don’t? The law enforcement departments of many, many cities with a significant number of establishments that sell/serve liquor do exactly that. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. There are no procedural nor legal issues. There are only so many units on patrol at any given time and more bars than there are available officers. Furthermore, a busy city replete with gang violence, assaults, etc. will prioritize those calls over Code 5’ing a bar for drunks. That said, we often receive grants specifically for DUI enforcement. That grant money is often used to fund DUI checkpoints and DUI task force cars.

To add to the DUI topic, if you venture into a small(er) city with nothing going on (…like Fullerton, California or Hermosa Beach, California), you’ll observe exactly what I’m talking about. Because overall crime is low, the cops park out in front of the bars or along the side streets just waiting for the inebriated to enter their vehicles.

Good to know that this is happening. You make me realize how I'm working from that insular 'if I didn't notice it, it isn't happening' mindset.

Will you be getting any BMW M2s or any BMW for that matter to drive as a police car like in Germany to chase any potential offenders?

I know in Europe it's quite commonly used.

No worries! I have similar conversations about law enforcement accountability. People assume we never get reprimanded and/or fired, but it happens all the time. I’ve had so many partners relieved and/or fired that I’ve lost count.

Never! You have to remember that BMW and Mercedes cars are utilized differently in Europe. Here they are largely mid-level luxury cars. Overseas they are used as taxis, etc. We will forever use Ford and Chevy cars and trucks.

This was common in our small town around bar closing time on weekends.

In some places where this is common, the bar's patrons coordinate a 100% sober driver to go out around closing time and attract the attention of the waiting cop so the others get away clean while the officer is distracted chasing the decoy rabbit.....

Aside from aiding and abetting an impaired driver to get behind the wheel (…which says a lot about the people willing to do that), the person or persons now put themselves in the crosshairs of the cops. They subject themselves to citations for vehicle violations, etc., which results in the financial penalties associated with those violations.

Be thankful that you're not an officer in the UK, where they don't usually carry side arms and drive Vauxhall Astra diesel hatchbacks for patrol vehicles.....

It could be worse, like a J3 Cub taking off out of LAX! Cub 941, climb to 1,500 if able and notify the next shift's controllers when completed.....

I remember going to Denmark in the 90s. Saw a Ford dealership as we walked to the bus line (SO much easier than driving) A brand new GAS Escort was going for something like $60,000. Merc diesel was about 28,000, and that's what all the taxis were. Something about 35MPG, and petrol at $4/LITER

Or trying to keep the jets (unless it's a BA46 ) behind a DC3! Need like 15miles behind him from the OM (about 5 miles out) to exiting the runway! I never minded too much the slow departures; I could always get them turned out of the way.

Thanks for calling out my little town of Hermosa Beach. I grew up in that fine little town and I was a teenager in the '60s. How is this relevant to this thread? Well, we had a motorcycle officer back then named Cavanaugh who was feared by ever single kid either driving, walking, or riding. He had no heart and a great big ticket book. He was a legend in his own time. At the time, we all sort of hated him because it was the thing to do. But looking back on it now, Cavanaugh's presence in our little town made me a better driver. I was always fearful that I would be caught doing something ticket-worthy. So, when I started driving I did not-kid-like things like using turn signals, driving the speed limit, and stopping fully at stop signs. Even though I never got a ticket from this motorcycle cop legend, he made me a better driver. If I could find him today, I'd say "thank you"!

There is a recent post on Facebook asking if anybody remembered this guy. There were many responses. Image being a LEO and having people talk about you 60 years later!

If you want a little entertainment, check out this link to the conversation about him, starting with "He'd ticket his grandmother"!!

Just about every small town around here has a Cavanaugh. One nearby town had officer "Eugene, the Ticket Machine." A small city a few counties away had a chief who was rumored to not be satisfied until every single person that ever passed through his city was in their jail at least three times.

Our town had a PT officer that I can't remember the name of right now, but he lived in a cheap apartment over a store on Main Street and only worked weekends. The dude was so ruthless that he once gave snow ordinance tickets to old ladies for parking outside of a church on Easter Sunday...on a sunny 50F degree spring morning a day before the snow ordinance ended for the winter! I actually heard two other officers talking about it in disbelief the day after.....

I don't think so. We've got SpaceX Starlink satellites instead.
