I doubt it will make you feel any better OP, but I had this exact same thing happen on a 911 GTS and my last car, Giulia Quadrifoglio. Neither covered by warranty - full cost both times.

In the UK, claiming anything on insurance is an exercise in futility - they just get it back in increased premiums over the following few years as it affects 'no claims' discount.

+1 anyone worried about BMW best look at Porsche. They are as exposed to the world as BMW are the radiators. A touch ridiculous this all is.

My car is finally reassembled. It took a while to get the part in over the weekend.

With the old radiator out, it gave me a chance to inspect the radiator cover. You can easily spread the fins on the plastic grill with your finger. This radiator doesn't stand a chance against rocks or any road debris.

Good to know the car is so fairly priced for the lack of quality/durability of key components lol We all face this until good solutions are easily found/available.

I will be installing Zunsport screens on this car as soon as they are available. (any day now)

Everyone in the shop is surprised at how cheap this is.

They should not be at all. BMW is not in this for a durability exercise at all lol. Its just money and for larger margins on each vehicle.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to go the route of changing them out for upgraded Mishimoto rads that have their own steel rock guards… I’m just not certain Zunsport in addition to the flimsy soft bmw plastic guards won’t create too much air flow restriction and wouldn’t want to spend $$ on Zunsport ones to find out that’s the case

When does this reach the level of a recall? Completely obvious from the launch of this car and now seeing the disastrous results. This actually kept me from making a deposit on an allocation

All bmw had to do was to use steel instead of the flimsy plastic guards and problem solved! But they have to cut costs every chance they get

I'm watching this situation closely. Beyond PPF and ceramic coating this is the first 'mod' that I am looking to address. Hopefully anyone who seeks to install any of the M3/M4 parts will report on here if they fit.

I think I saw something like a $2,600 repair bill estimate for the primary radiator. The BMW factory part is some astronomical price. At least if you happened to get lucky and you were close to home if it got punctured there is the Mishimoto available to replace the stock part with. If you weren't so lucky and it happened out on a trip away from home it might be a massive PIA to figure out how to get it sorted.

My plan for now is to hope for the Zunsport grills and possibly see if the Moshimoto skid plate protection for the oil cooler will fit the G87. If I had the extra cash I might tackle replacing the stock radiators. That sounds like the best option frankly which makes me a little sad that would be where my modification money had to go first.

Main radiator is $2,600. One Auxiliary radiator is $1,600. I saw my tech do the auxiliary. It was a peace of cake with the tire off and fender liner removed. I think most of the hassle is refilling the radiator.

The Zunsport grills should provide a decent fix. They also make a oil cooler grill for the G80 so that should work. It looks like it has a tighter mesh than the Mishimoto grill so it might provide better protection against smaller rocks.

It's already been confirmed that the G80 Mishimoto skid plate works. Mine arrived yesterday. Now to find time to install...

I have no idea how to approach this but I am thinking about writing a letter to BMW NA. Maybe they won't care, but if enough people reach out with problems then maybe they will listen.

I will eagerly wait your DIY video if you’re planning to tackle it yourself. I just hope the centre one (heat exchanger) can be done all from the top without having to remove the bumper (I doubt it but someone had mentioned it’s possible). For the other two (the side auxiliary ones) these are fairly straight forward from the wheel well

Absolutely on the videos, and looking at their oil radiator grill as well. They just updated the website today with the new placeholder items for the G87 items.

Sounds like 3-4 weeks foe availability.

So noob question;
They have an Outer grill set, Front grill set, & Center grill set for the G87. I was going to hop on the preorder list but not sure what the difference is. If I get the outer grill set think that will cover everything or will a guy need all 3?

Might want to inform them AMG offered a solution for this similar problem. See post #67.
