This for example, is why electric cars still have frunks.

You need a certain amount of crumple zone. You need a certain rounded shape and deformation that prevents pedestrians from being launched over the car.

Niche cars like the Caterham can be small because those buyers don't care about side airbags or baby seats.

But mass-market manufacturers like BMW need to be safe. And the "safe" bar is raised every year.

I put the car on the scales 3 days ago. The result: 1723 Kg without driver and 30% fuel. Car is auto, with M sport seats and sunroof.
It's on the heavy side, but the weight distribution is close to perfection

Not to mention the car has more grip, better brakes, better suspension etc.

The ONLY place the weight is truly "felt" in my experience is in transitions, and even then because body control is so good, its an annoyance more than an actual hinderance.

There is no such thing as an xDrive M2 at the moment, but an xDrive M4C is 68kg heavier than a manual RWD M4, likely an M2 xDrive auto vs RWD manual would have the same weight difference. Probably 1793kg vs 1725kg, depending on specific equipment.

Well if the difference between G80 AWD and RWD is 68kg that is about 150lbs and the G87 should be just a tad bit lighter than that so I wouldn't say its insignificant, but I get what you mean.

Auto is 25kg heavier than the manual for the same spec otherwise. Depending on spec (steel roof vs sunroof vs carbon roof, carbon seats vs standard, etc) it varies from a DIN weight of about 1700 to 1730kg for the manual and 1725 to 1755kg for the auto.

More like 105kg, comparing cars in the same market with an otherwise similar spec. There is only about 40kg of extra structure in the M3 vs M2 due to the additional length and doors (same width, little difference in height, same platform, same dynamic components). The other 65kg is the difference the xDrive and auto make and the weight reduction the M3 has due to the lower wheels and battery weight.

The M3 xDrive Comp spec in the US is quoted at 1810kg / 3990lb, so quite a bit heavier than a manual M2.

IIRC the G80/G82 cars also have lighter aluminium doors, forged wheels, a lighter Battery, carbon strut brace, and can also be spec'd with carbon ceramic brakes which are all elements that contribute to weight savings compared to our G87s, so the difference when compared is not exactly apples to apples as those elements on a G87 would also make it a significantly lighter car.

As someone that owns a true porker (i4 M50) at 2000kg+ BMW does know a thing or two about getting a heavy car to handle. My M50 handles well and you really feel the weight only when you want to rapidly change direction. I'm not sure my car would be decent in an autocross but on a track I think it would be okay.

A G80 M3 is as big as an E39 M5.
They have grown, which is why I want to M2.

I had an E30 M3, E36 M3 and E90 335i and with each generation they got porky and added luxury amenities. With the M2 you now have bigger brakes, stiffer chassis, adaptive suspension, etc and that stuff add weight.

I an to teacky M2, but I'm not racing it and based on Green Hell times, I think I'll be okay.

This is probably obvious to a lot of people, but I did the BMW M driving event in Thermal CA (awesome event BTW) we did time trials on a short course with F87 M2 comps. I think there were 6 people in our group each with their own F87 identically speced. 5 out of the 6 were all pretty close in best times except for this one guy from Costa Rica with a amateur racing background. He was easily 4 seconds better than the best time. The best being 45 seconds and his time was close to 40 second (I can’t remember the exact times, but you get the idea). I knew skill was important, but that experience really drove home how much of an impact a good driver can have over a ok driver in identical cars on an identical course.

I managed a slightly faster time around the ///M Experience autocross course in the i4 M50 than the M4 Comp. Cornering speed was similar and acceleration between turns was similar, but off the line the instant torque had a slight edge. Higher speeds and a longer course would see the i4 M50 slow down due to brake and tyre overheating, though.

Probably a.combination.
My M50 is lowered on Eibach springs and I have the factory 20" wheels. I can easily pull 1g on an on/off ramp.

It's a fun car. I can't see the M50 as a track car though. It's definitely a cruiser but battery limits make it not good for tracking.
