I used to work with the guys. At least 60% of those cars were basically cost of materials. While I still get good discounts, it’s way more now. There was no such thing as full hoods or anything like that back then. Some of my early cars, they only had 12” max width. I did cars for $250 - $300 back in the day. Then they started doing headlights.

PPF was actually a pretty niche thing back in the day. It is very commonplace now.

EDIT: With no guarantee they will be releasing a manual in future generations I plan on keeping mine. For that reason PPF made sense to me.

1. I keep it in great condition for me. I paid a decent amount of money for it, and I was taught as a child to take care of the things I had.

2. I do keep it in great condition for the next owner because it nets me more $ when I do decide to sell it.

3. It's more than paid for itself on at least two of my vehicles that were hit by road debris on the interstate. My last BMW had $4k in damage from being hit by a tire tread. No paint damage & no damage, minus a scuff on the ppf that self-healed.

Mine was a bit under $7k..... I agree it's a stupid amount of money. I've heard the arguments that you shouldn't full ppf a car that costs less than $100k, etc.

Personally, I would rather have spent that money on PPF than a full carbon areo kit for example. That's just me.

PPF definitely serves a need. However, most of the cost is the labor and there are so many shops that install PPF now. I’ve seen so many bad installs that you really have to vet the shop that’s doing the installation. This statement almost always rings true and certain does here - you get what you pay for. There’s a reason why some shops charge more than others and the results are night and day. If you’re going to get PPF done then do it right. Having visible seams everywhere and missing coverage is worse than having nothing at all, IMO.

Also, PPF is a consumable with a average life of 5 years so expect to have to pay again to re-PPF your car in the near future.

Here's the kicker no one else is mentioning.

With PPF on my car I can use waterless washes at events far away where I can't fully detail the car. I had so much dirt and road grime from the 200 mile journey to MPACT in the rain.

Without PPF, if I did what I did in the staging lanes at MPACT I would have swirled out my paint so bad. I sprayed the car with detailing spray and just wiped off all the dirt. 10 minutes in the sun and it self healed and looked immaculate.

Without PPF my paint would have been dirty all day, or if I tried to do a waterless wash I would have swirled it so bad it would have needed at least a 1 step polish.

I'll never understand the logic behind people who don't like PPF. If you don't want to spent the money that's one thing, but to attack others, just makes look the guy you're responding to look stupid.

This. I chose to full PPF instead of just frontal coverage for exactly this point. My G87 is black, so it maybe stays clean for about 2 days if undriven and garaged after a wash.

I can be quick and careless on the maintenance washes and use quick detailer or ONR/ McKee's n914 to do a quick waterless wash. Heck, if I am in a pinch I could use just wet towel for a quick wipe off with no lubrication at all. Unless I am touching any areas where there is no PPF coverage, I don't even have to worry too much about how clean my washing medium (sponge/mitt, etc.) is. Any marring or surface scratches on the PPF will self-heal in the sun.
