I honestly like the new Arctic Race Blue on the M340i and it would be more practical, but the MSRP price gap should be $5K max to me (especially if I'm giving up some handling due to the size/slight weight add).
It doesn’t make sense when the M340i is much more car, and appropriately more expensive sticker price. The only explanation is an M340i retains more value at the end of the lease. Not sure why I would step down to a M240i when the M340i leases at the same price.

Two different cars. 2 door coupe vs 4 door saloon. The comparison to make would be between the M440i and M240i the you are basically into a size game. Having had an F36, I prefer the M240i any day. Miles better car.

I understand the logic in your theoretical comparison, but in the real world people might not make such linear comparisons. This is one of those situations. I would seriously consider stepping down from a M340i to a M240i if the lesser car actually cost less to lease, but it doesn’t.

The things you mentioned plus it just looked better to me overall. And I don't hate iDrive 8 but 8.5 is definitely a bit more refined and slicker.

It’s not theoretical. Your assumption that an M240i is a lesser car than an M340i is a mistake depending on how you are trying to compare the two. As I said originally, the two cars are different animals. You can’t equally compare them. Anyway, your money, your choice.

Why is m340i much more car. Other than it’s a 4 door with mild hybrid the engine is the same the transmission is the same, the chassis shares a lot of parts. Haven’t driven a 340 but I imagine it wouldn’t be that different

I could mention the hybrid system, or the driving assistant systems, or small features like a power trunk, etc., but I don’t need to continue to veer off topic. If you know you know.

I’m not only comparing the two, I’m real-world shopping them against one another!

But this is simple. Notice the MSRP is ~$8000 higher for a M340i than a M240i. Then notice they lease for the same price. That’s the objective facts I’m pointing to as surprising.

I’m sure I’m wasting a post by biting but, the 2 series isn’t a lesser car to a 3 these days. It’s a different size and category option for a start and shares the same engines, platform etc etc. You can’t really compare the two.
Lease deals will come and go based on many factors.

Anyway, continue to remain surprised that you can lease both for the same price and rent which ever one you like.

I’d ignore this guy. He’s been on the G20, M4 etc forums airing may dislikes with the cars. I think he like the reactions.
Seems like a Tesla guy for sure as you said.

Hmm, this is an interesting revelation. I had never considered that there are m340i drivers who believe that they are driving the more superior , next level of vehicle, compared to the m240i.

I always considered the m340i basically the 4-door version of the m240i, and vice versa.

And those who wanted and needed the 4-doors, go for the m340i.

Wow. Sensitive. Didn’t intend to offend. Perhaps the 3 series crowd would respect the difference between 2 and 3 series.

If they’re the same, why does BMW charge $8000(!) more for a M340i than a M240i? This isn’t a nominal disparity.

I’ll add- I’m not intending to disparage the 2 Series. I am just surprised to learn a much less expensive car leases at the same price as a more expensive one. Don’t be offended.

The 4 series is the 2 door version of the 3 series.
The 2 series is the 2 door version of the 1 series.
Then add Grand Coupes just to confuse things lol.

This is where this guy is going wrong.

But I agree that 3/4 series owners don’t think they have a superior car. Just a different one. I’m a case point - had a 4 series and now the M240i and I would not swap.
However, M2 owners v M240i may have a different view…

Then it’s not that you not only perhaps don’t understand the BMW model line up, it’s that you don’t understand how lease pricing is calculated.

You can dream. Go and troll another forum. You seem to be doing well with the 2/3/4 and 5 series groups including M versions.

Agreed. I only recall two more luxurious options the 3 had over the 2... soft dash and a power lift, neither of which I care about. Then there's the mild hybrid which adds weight and most don't want. Oh and a few interior trims, which the 2 now seems to have anyways.

You can spec a M240i exactly the same as a M340i and it's somehow $8K more for 2 more doors and more space. If you don't need that and want better performance, the 2 seems like a no brainer. It also looks much more unique as the 3 has basic sedan proportions and will never stick out.

I would have assumed the sedan market is more competitive so the coupe would be priced much closer as there are literally no more AWD Coupes available.

4 series comes in xdrive as do the Audi equivalents - in the UK anyways.
Not kept that close to Jag or Merck’s but would assume similar options there.

In the F series, the 2 series was the 2-door version of the 1 series. it was the same platform. The interior was also identical.
With the G series it is a different story.
The 1 series and 2 series grand coupe have the same platform as the mini.
It is FWD or X drive for the M135 and M235
The 2 series coupe G42 is now on the 3 and 4 series platform. It is RWD or X drive.
Interior is now different than in the 1 series, it is now with the larger dashboard as in the 3 and 4 series
