When PPF is applied there are always little pockets of air and moisture that get trapped between the paint and PPF. They eventually evaporate.

What makes you think the water and solvents in the paint can't evaporate the same way? That's what "curing" is.

I've also wondered why manufacturers don't provide this as a factory install option. I'd really like to see it become one in the future. Applying the PFF while the car is mid-assembly would reduce labor as well. For how well PPF works it really surprises me that manufacturers haven't offered an equivalent.

I often wonder why auto makers don't offer a PPF option from the factory. Apply it right after the parts are painted. Figure out a way for robots to do it to minimize cost and maximize consistency. Should be better and cheaper than how it's done after the car is built and there is clearly a healthy market for it. Seems like a missed OEM profit opportunity.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was about $7.5k for the whole car in stealth ppf + ceramic coating. May have been a bit more.

Also if you do regular ppf will it give it the gloss look back?

I have a g87 in production in frozen portimao. It’ll be my first time with a frozen finish. I’ll be leasing it. Should I plan to ppf? After reading a lot of the posts that seems to be the overwhelming consensus but does it make sense if it’s a lease or will scratches be considered “wear & tear” when the lease ends? Don’t want to be destroyed when the lease is up.

nah don't bother if it's a lease, it won't be more destroyed then any other car, in fact the frozen paints are reported to be more durable then traditional ones. The issue with them is you can't polish/claybar them and touch-up paint work doesn't really work either (it's possible but doesn't turn out as well as traditional finish).

I'm buying my frozen portimao and still considering whether I want to bother with PPF, might do the front bumper but rock chips aren't a issue where I live as long as you don't make a habit of tailgating gravel/dump trucks on the highway, been inspecting friends/family's 4-5 yr old cars 40k miles+ that don't have PPF to confirm what I remember about my old cars and it's hard to find any chips on them.


You should just put Dr. Beaselys matte ceramic coat on it so bird dropping/tree sap/road tar/water marks etc don't etch the paint and leave it at that.

You're right that PPF is gas permeable to a degree. It does slow this process, though. I think this is only a concern with freshly sprayed body shop paint that is not baked. If the shop bakes it, it's probably ok. It's also not a concern with OEM clear which BMW uses powder and bakes it at high temp so it is 100% cured by the time of delivery.

Placing an order for Frozen Pure Grey...looks sick. I want the real thing for $2300, not a matte wrap for $7k.

Sure, I'll run the risk of having more difficult paint repair owning the car. Sure, I'll have to wash the car myself and take care of it the right way. Bring it on.

Sure, I'll probably also spend around $7k on full PPF and ceramic coating too...but in the end, I'll have the real thing, not just a wrap over a normal base or metallic color that everyone else has.

If I bought a base color off the lot, then I might be going the matte wrap route, but I'm ordering a car new...so I'm getting what I want.

Don’t pay too much attention to the negativity in this post about frozen paints.

I for one never liked a repaint on regular gloss paint, it never matches 100%. The best paint shops can get close but a trained eye will spot a repaint.

Is color matching a frozen color more difficult? Sure but it’s not impossible. One positive you want have clear coat orange peal to deal with. Frozen paints are inherently harder and don’t chip as easily.

Get you a standard color and wrap it with stealth PPF if you want the look.

You get the look of frozen and get the protection. Plus you can always switch back to gloss.

Frozen paints requires special care and maintenance. And God forbid you ever need to repaint a panel.

If you get frozen paint, you most likely are wrapping it in stealth PPF anyway to try and protect it. Save the money and use it to get you a stealth PPF wrap on your gloss paint.

FYI… I had a X3M in Deep Frozen Grey Metallic and it was wrapped in stealth PPF.

Uh yeah only problem is is that same beautiful blue doesn’t come in regular gloss. Of course we would stealth ppf the gloss version but it’s just simply not possible. Obvious.
