One more question, do you know which parts were replaced without resolution VS which part was replaced on the second visit? Or were all those parts replaced on your second visit?

Right rear strut replaced and strut top mount.
Unfortunately lots of people have had those exact parts replaced with no reduction of noise.

Hope the noise doesn’t come back for you and you lucked out!

Can anyone with a 230 chime in? Anyone having this suspension noise on a 230 or M240 without M sport adaptive suspension (if it’s possible to option without)?

Great thread. Read in its entirety. I have a 2024 G42... I noticed that thump in the right rear the moment I hit some bumpy roads off the dealer's lot. As most folks who posted in this thread... my ears are also very tuned to noises in vehicles. Of course my wife and son said they couldn't hear anything. But it's there... dull thud in the right rear over uneven pavement and before I saw this thread I thought it was the suspension mount or bad shock. Glad to hear that's not the case and will sub this to see if/when someone finally diagnosis it. TJZ67201 Awesome work! And thank you for taking the time to document and post your findings.

Cross-post from the Rear Suspension Thump thread..

Not sure if this will help at all, it’s probably been done before, but I reached out to BMW USA and BMW customer relations regarding the issue. If anyone has time, I would suggest contacting them as well so that they are aware that this thumping sound is NOT normal and other people are NOT satisfied with the current state of things. PM me if you want an email template

Connect with Customer Relations link: https://www.bmwusa.com/contact-us.html

I just sent a lengthy email to ShareYourThoughts@bmwusa.com, one of official emails they provide. They should be bombarded with complaints. Someone actually reads these too. I did this for an issue I was having with my last BMW and they replied at least.

Ok so I got a call back from BMW NA today. They are in the process of investigating my complaint/claim. It sounds like their next step is to contact my dealer who performed the initial investigation and strut replacement. After that, he mentioned the next step would include taking another look at the issue and it sounded like they would have a tech from BMW NA present.

It’s possible that other members on this forum have had this done. Either way, I think it is important that we all submit complaints NOW. If there is enough noise they may try to shut us all up and fix the damn issue. It’s worth a try anyways… I’m just fed up with hearing this fucking noise all the time.

If you have 2-5 minutes, please either fill out the form on this website and/or send an email to the address below. This is what I have done and is what prompted their call-back. I don’t want to accept that this is a “normal” sound or “nuisance noise” or what ever other bullshit they may say. Thank you!!

Indeed a very thorough thread. Thanks to all who have been so diligently documenting all this.

That said, I had not experienced any sounds until recently (October 2023 delivery). For me it seems to emanate from the rear driver's side. I am hyper vigilant of all noises and the first time I heard a "thump" was a hard turn to the left. It sounded as if a panel flipped up, and then slammed back down. I tried a similar turn to the right and no sound. I did it a gain to the left and no sound. I hear it every now and then only when turning left??

I am scheduled to go to the shop next week. I will bring this up and see if there have been any updates.

TBH that sounds like something entirely different. Most of us are hearing a light thumping noise over very minor bumps since taking delivery. No loud noise and not related to turning at all. Hopefully your dealer will be able to sort you out

Nope! Supposed to hear back from BMW NA by Wednesday. I’ll probably call Thursday or Friday if I don’t hear back before then

Per the repair order they re-torqued all exhaust hanger bolts and rear suspension bolts, removed and re-installed the headliner, removed and re-installed the rear seats, and dismantled the trunk. Kudos to the dealership for trying, but no dice, and I don’t want push it further at risk or introducing new issues and burning what is. at the moment, a great relationship with the SA. Hopefully someone has luck with this!
I think my issue has been resolved via an indirect upgrade. I just picked up my car after having the Bilstein EVO SE coilover kit installed. This was after I was experiencing the thump noise with both the OEM springs and the Eibach springs (which is another story in itself). After 30 miles of highway and surface street driving on roads that I take daily on which I've heard the thump, NO MORE THUMP! Sorry I don't have an actual fix to share, but rather a $3k upgrade you can do with the added benefit of resolving the thump. I'll report back in a couple of weeks to confirm that the noise is indeed gone.

Did your car have the adaptive suspension?

Curious to hear your results over time. Looks like the EVO kit is just shocks and springs, it reuses factory mounts and bushings. If your remains quiet, I'd think our noises come from shocks. Less likely to be springs.

I’m trying to remember if, in all the posts about this, if anyone has replaced the shocks with non-bmw ones and still had the thump.

I thought someone said they got ohlins and the thump stayed.

Yes I have EDC.
I agree, the springs are not the cause of the thump.
See photo for which OEM part was removed/replaced with the rear spring with the Bilstein install.

Good to hear! Thump is driving me nuts. At the point ill either replace with coilovers or sell if a dealer wont fix.

Hows the ride with the evo se coilovers? No recoding?

No recoding needed.
I will refer you to Troy’s post for performance as I only have 30 miles on it in wet weather.

The thought of trading in the car crossed my mind but I think the M240i xdrive is a semi-unicorn. Hard to find a similar package in competitors at this price point…granted I just dumped another $4k into it. lol.

Same here. Someone on the FB group claimed that getting aftermarket shock absorbers got rid of the thump. I think they we ohlins but he never shared a link.

I think this might be my next step in troubleshooting the problem. BMW clearly doesn’t want to do anything about it and I refuse to accept the noise as normal. It may be quieter in some cars, but mine is very annoying. Makes me not want to drive the car when it’s cold out. I’ve toyed with the thought of trading in but I love everything else about the car…
