Looks like lease deals in New Jersey are going back to a more reasonable rate. $649 a month with 5200 down.

Just realised my spec is a hair over £40k on my 230i and means I pay the premium tax band for road tax in the UK. £550 a year fml!

Edit: despite dealer discount making it possible to go under the 40k because the list price is over I'm screwed.

Nothing is leasing well right now from BMW. Or at least not as well as it used to.

But in the past, the 2 series never leased as well as 3 series and above.

Looking at lease offers on 2 series on BMW page I see.

36 months $700 + 5000 down = 30K and residual of 29K.

Pay cash 59K and its worth 29K in 3 years.

I see no difference between leasing and paying cash.

Educate me please I am trying to decide what to do.

First thing is you will not be leasing a car with a 59k MSRP for $700/month. It says on BMWs leasing section for these cars that the MSRP that deal is based on is $53495 which includes the destination/handling fee. You also need to remember at lease end the 29k residual does not include tax's or fees for the buyout so it will be more than 29K for buyout. Leasing a car and then purchasing at the end is almost always the worst way to purchase a car if you plan on buying it in the beginning.

I bought my M240, but lease my wife's X3.

There are a couple tricks regarding leases.

We are on our 5th lease for the X3. We go with 3yr/30k miles. She only has 10 mile round trip commute to work and we take 2 beach trips a year in it (Pgh to HH and Pgh to TSI).

After 24-30 months into her lease, we start to get the itch for a new one. At that time, you can get any BMW dealership to buy out your lease (pretty sure any dealer or you can sell private but won't make it a smooth transition). We do this every time. The dealer bought back her 2020 X3 with 15k miles on it, and by doing that, we received 8k (trade in value way higher that payoff). Now that was due to the high value for used at that time, but going back to our other leases, we got anywhere from $2500-$4000 from selling our lease back. Add that $ to incentives and it's kept our lease payment right at $500/mo each time we trade it in. This time we got a couple extra upgrades since we got so much for the 2020. She has never paid for an oil change since her first lease in 2014, and hers car have always been under warranty. It's a seamless process, they appraise your lease, you build your new one, you track it to the dealer, they call you that it's ready, you sign a couple times and hand them the keys.

Another lease trick is for those that buy out after the lease is up, you negotiate what you are going to pay for the car. My friend did this 2-3 years ago with his truck and got another $2500 off of it. That isn't something I would do, but he loved the truck and didn't want to have to go through the process of getting another one, at that time.

Sorry, forgot to mention, when you sell your lease back, you negotiate that too just like you are trading in a car you own. You should be able to squeeze another 1k-3k, depending on your negotiation ability and those that you are dealing with.

I like this option. I don't keep cars for that long 1-2 years these are my toys/hobbies. So Your process is interesting to me. I am more interested in the flexibility you have vs saving a few $. Again hobbies cost money is how I look at it.

This definitely applies more if you are releasing through the same dealership you are turning in. This was true during the past few years but I would caution anyone that when used car prices come down more do not be surprised when your lease turn in is not getting you anything extra. COVID made thins crazy the past few years though. A friend of mine had 24 month Q8 lease and when it was time to turn in this past January he did some shopping around and got a dealership to write him a check for 12k to bring his car to them because the used price on Q8s had went to the moon. Wild times.

I can agree with that. Leases have always been a gamble, just a lot bigger of a gamble with todays economy and not knowing or have an idea on where interest rates, trade ins, and purchasing new in 2-3 years when you decide.

We continue to lease my wife's cars, as we put little miles on them, therefore, worth well more to sell back than turn in.

I purchased mine, and will continue to do so. I am not a big gambler, and we may have just had some luck on our side when it came our time to go new with our BMW leases.
