The 1500+ BHP G87 M2 is nearly complete!
Hey guys, another week means another G87 M2 project video. Having completed the engine build, this week we’re completing the single turbo setup, getting the air jacks working (yes they’re awesome) and wrapping up the final few bits before Tom begins with the tuning.
AIR JACKS RAISE THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME Jay from German Auto Werks finalized the air jacks setup and we lifted the car for the first time. The AST and Krontec system works amazingly well however, we discovered the legs were a little bit short for our application. With high-profile drag tires and standard suspension, the car will barely lift off the ground… These air jacks are designed for circuit cars, not drag racing. AST, being the legends they are, are currently manufacturing some bespoke longer legs to optimize the setup. This will make swapping wheels and tyres at the strip much easier. INSTALLING THE SINGLE TURBO After chasing down the DHL delivery driver, we managed to get the Miami Blue Precision 8385 Sportsman single turbo installed on the car. We also got the Miami Blue CSF inlet manifold installed and the two-together look beautiful in the engine bay. The flange we were waiting on from Florida finally arrived, meaning the car had to travel 3 hours back to Overkill Performance to complete the single-turbo kit ready for tuning. NEXT WEEK As this post goes out, we’re currently running in the new engine and beginning the tuning process. All of which you’ll see in next week’s episode. The car still has a way to go before it’s running full power but you can enjoy some LOUD single turbo sounds in the meantime. |

The R44 Performance G87 M2 Drag Car is alive!
Just when you thought there was nothing else you could do to an M2, we installed even more game-changing modifications. This week, we installed a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber Tillett Racing bucket seats, a Radium Engineering fuel system, the rest of the CSF cooling suite & more! In the latest video, we also show you the G87 driving for the first time! TILLETT CARBON FIBER M BUCKET SEATS Now, take a look at these! These are the new Tillett BMW M carbon fiber bucket seats based on the beloved B10s. Not only do they look incredible with their gloss carbon finish and M tri-colour details but, they also offer much more support by distributing your weight across your lower spine rather than it all being centred on your butt. This means you can relax your lower back muscles instead of using them to constantly hold you in place - better for comfort, endurance and driver engagement. These seats are coming soon to the R44 Performance online store. If you have a car with comfort seats and wish you had the factory buckets, these will be a great alternative! ALPHA N CARBON FIBRE BODY PANELS As part of our quest to achieve a curb weight of 1500 kg, we picked up a full carbon hood and carbon fenders. They also make the car look very aggressive which is a bonus. The vents in the bonnet are great for cooling and you can even see the Miami Blue Precision turbo peaking through up close. The Alpha N carbon fenders are also functional, allowing air to escape from the front wheel arches to reduce drag. RADIUM ENGINEERING FUEL SYSTEM Following the engine build and single turbo setup, the next challenge was to deliver the necessary fuel required to achieve 1500+ bhp. The OEM fuel pumps are only capable of around 800-1,000 horsepower. You can push them a bit further by upgrading the motors within them - something we do on customer 1,000 horsepower builds. With the power we’re looking at, an upgrade is essential as we don’t want any limitations from the fuel supply. Lots of drag cars, such as Tom Wrigley’s G80 M3, will delete the fuel tank to save weight and just use a small external tank & swirl pot. As we want this car to still be useable on the road, we’re retaining the OEM tank which feeds the Radium Engineering swirl pot using the OEM fuel pump. From the swirl pot, we’re running 3 additional fuel pumps. 1 will be run off the ignition and the other 2 will be run off the Motiv for extra fuel pressure when needed (typically over 50% throttle). The fuel then runs out through a filter to the Radium Engineering regulator where we’ll also run an ethanol sensor to determine our current mix. Radium also supplied us with some larger diameter fuel lines to optimize flow. This build wouldn’t be possible without them so we’d like to say a huge thank you to Radium! As for the fuel injection, we’re using the OEM setup with uprated Injector Dynamics 2,600cc injectors. COMPLETING THE CSF COOLING PACKAGE As you saw previously, we installed the CSF level-up inlet manifold - coated in Miami Blue. To complete the setup we installed the CSF front mount heat exchanger, ZF8 transmission cooler and engine oil cooler. With the amount of power the M2 will be making, things will get pretty hot under the hood so these CSF upgrades are must-haves! Alongside the increased cooling capacity and higher quality, one great benefit of CSF is the integrated rock guards to protect the components from road debris. With the front bumper of the G87 being quite open, your OEM radiators are very exposed to damage. One big rock and your car could be in serious trouble. RUNNING IN THE M2 ON THE DYNO As with any brand-new engine, it needs some run time to bed in before pushing it too hard. Tom got the car on the dyno for some run-in miles going up and down the rev range, changing through the gears to simulate a typical road driving scenario. This involved putting the car on a base map to make it driveable. With the size of the turbo, Tom couldn’t get the power much lower than 750 bhp for the initial break-in period. We couldn’t take it on the road just yet due to the windows still missing. The first drive is coming soon! |

The R44 G87 M2 gets a brand new livery!
This week, we took the G87 M2 to Identity Wraps for its new look. Huge shoutout to Identity Wraps, Jakethewrapper & Alpha N for completely transforming the M2.
With the M2 being a competitive drag car, we needed a new livery to showcase all the brand sponsors involved (whilst also looking awesome). THE LIVERY All vinyl used to wrap the M2 is from Inozetek. We’ve been using Inozetek for years due to the paint-like finish and durability - not to mention their broad catalogue of colors. Inozetek vinyl is quite thick and tricky to work with but the result is always worth it. Papaya Orange This was the original wrap colour our M2’s been rocking since mid-2023. Our G87 has become very well-known in this color so it was important we didn’t lose it with the livery. Miami Blue A beautiful Porsche color - Miami Blue matches the car’s Precision 8385 turbocharger and painted CSF charge cooler inlet manifold. Laguna Seca Blue Laguna Seca is a colour seen on iconic BMWs such as the E46 M3. We thought it was the perfect option to separate the Miami Blue section and the Satin Black Rear. Satin Black G87 M2s look incredible in full satin black. When choosing a color for the rear, it was the first that came to mind. SPONSORS There are also several big names in the industry scattered around the M2. The purpose of this project is to showcase the best the aftermarket BMW industry has to offer and the G87 will wear those names with pride as it travels across the world. STYLING With R44 Performance being an industry leader in BMW styling, you won’t be surprised to find some carbon fibre upgrades to the exterior. The M2 is still running its MHC LDN Edition1 carbon kit including the front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser. This was the first G87 M2 carbon kit to the market and it has inspired many copies throughout its life cycle. The car also features the MHC LDN carbon fibre front bumper insert which replaces the gloss black centre section. To tie the front together, we're also running MHC's carbon fibre front ducts. You may also notice the aggressive, but functional, Project Gamme carbon fibre headlight intake. This gives the Precision turbo sitting behind an infinite supply of cool air as the M2 launches down the strip. [ATTACH]359771[ATTACH] Beyond that, we installed an aggressive Alpha N carbon fibre hood in combination with Alpha N’s carbon fibre louvred front fenders. The car still needed its windows and a few other safety features, so it wasn’t road-legal. We needed to find a recovery truck ASAP, so Rhys called some local traders to find a cheap truck that we could buy right away. The M2 needed to be transported up and down the country over the next week which would have cost us several thousand dollars so the idea was to find something cheap we could buy and sell once the job was finished. We purchased a beautiful Citroen Relay with ‘only’ 208,000 miles for less than $5,000. What a steal! Stay tuned next week for the M2's first drive! |
