You are right about that as I live in Colorado.

I am very careful about where and how I park and I don't think I have hit anything until this rock situation, which was a freak thing. My guess is as someone else has mentioned Colorado roads suck and i drive this car year round. This last winter was particularly harsh which might help to explain the look of my oil cooler. And the fact it looks this way after normal daily driving is further proof it needs a cover to protect it.

Can you clarify? Are you saying they estimated repairs at $32K?

I also doubt the engine is hurt. If you did indeed pull over as soon as the car told you to, I'm sure you're fine.

This is just the price of the short block not the cost to remove and replace
Remove and replace Includes: R&I Engine Assembly. Transfer Fuel and Electrical Assemblies and Engine Mounts. DOES NOT include transfer of Manifolds, Valve Covers), Timinq Cover(s), Oil Pan and/or Water Pump. NOTE: For bare Engine, refer to Long Block - R&R.

Yes that's the estimate they gave me for the engine. The oil cooler is an additional $1500.

As someone mentioned earlier, if you cut the motor right away when the car told you too you're likely fine. But, if you decline replacement and it goes 5K miles later, you'll be hating life

I'm really glad I leased the car now as I don't think I can keep it after all this even if it gets a new engine.

For $35K he could damn near have a 7 second B58.

If BMW is covering it under warranty, or he has it done out of pocket at BMW, then the price will obviously sky rocket!

I still think he’s fine if the car was acting fine when he pulled over.

Likely fine but it he had oil starvation it could come back to bite him in the ass and then circling back to insurance would likely not work.

I too prefer their design but here's their response to my G42 inquiry:

Thanks for the reply! We have sent your request to our Market research team for future review. We have not had an opportunity to research this in order to make a decision. However, the best way to stay up to date on new products would be to subscribe to our engineering blog!

I went ahead and got the Turner for my daughter's G42, even if I couldn't find a solid solution to the mesh, the plate itself still helps. At least that would buy me some time. That exposure looks to be penny wise pound foolish IMHO.

I drive to the office one day a week and leave about 4:30 in the morning. After discovering the placement of my oil cooler I was so paranoid of hitting something on the dark road. Time heals most anxiety, but it's still something I'm always thinking about. Maybe that's a good thing in way - makes you focus!

But how would insurance work today if it's not (yet) a problem? I doubt he can call-up his insurance with a concern of what could come and they just fork over $35K as a "just in case".

BMW engineers are likely smarter than the average Burger King employee, and I'm guessing they designed the sensors and warning lights to activate in a timely manner. It doesn't appear his damage was causing the oil gush out, so he likely had at least 4-5 qts being circulated.

I've read BMW will activate the oil light when it's 1 qt low, but it wasn't from an official source. I have zero doubt it will be activated by the time it's 2 qts low. That leaves him approximately 5 qts of oil, which could be driven for hundreds of miles in normal driving.

Pulling over within a mile, and w/o the oil pouring out, shouldn't be anything to lose sleep over.

I agree

The dealership claiming the engine is toast seems pretty suspect

XC3LLR8 good point, insurance wouldn't drop $30K on a just in case. I'd personally request some type of stipulation on the claim since damage is unknown.

Sheeeesh. I have the ZTK package and just came across this thread. My car just arrived over the weekend. I took a look at is on Sunday, and saw the oil cooler just under the front bumper. My first thought was WTF!! How is it not protected by something.

Yeah, its crazy. All it takes is hitting a cement parking block and your oil cooler is toast. It's literally the worst possible place they could have mounted it.

All the more reason to have the 360 cameras. I use mine all time when pulling-up to a curb.

It's nice things like an extra oil cooler that makes it stressful when someone else drives the car (wife, valet, mechanic, etc.).

It's the only thing that would make me want to go back to a manual (for most wifes/gfs that can't drive manual)

EXACTLY!! I love my wife, but she has rolled my front splitter 3 times on my SRT 392 over sidewalks next to parking lots. I walk out and the whole thing is bent up and facing the sky, and my eyeballs are poping out of my head, and she's like "WHAT?". SMH Thankfully the Challenger is pretty forgiving and it all popped back in place.

This BMW on the other hand, she would have destroyed the oil cooler. THANK GOD FOR THE FRONT CAMERAS!!!

How does your Challenger get banged up with those yellow protective floatation noodles?

I HATE THOSE THINGS!!!
Especially when you see aftermarket ones and a V6 challenger that doesn’t even ship from the factory with them. WTF 🤦‍♂️

I’ll never understand how that became a thing.

oldbmwtech where the skid plate mounts towards the front, is there anything metallic that the plate screws into or at least rests on, or is it screwing into and resting only the front bumper plastic/rubber? Kind of worried that this may be useless for any significant impacts
