I think the Q5 is an excellent choice. My daughter's first ride was an X1. She had it for 3 years. Then she went off to school in Virginia. I got her a brand new white GMC Canyon 4x4 and she customized it herself. (Big red stripes, black rolling tonneau cover, red badges.)
I don't customize myself, but when my daughter wanted to do it I encouraged her to give expression to her own style.

I'm not sure I'd like my dad to decide everything in my life like that. Although I sure appreciated getting a car for free when I was of age, it was a POS, and anyway I totalled it in 2 years, like most kids do |

I love it. Congrats to you and your son! I think there's a lot of lessons to be learned from your first car. My dad worked hard to buy me an '04 RX-8 as my first car and I'll never forget how much I valued that car and everything he put into it. I don't think these sorts of decisions should be viewed negatively, but rather the lesson that's passed on is what's important. For me, it was to always value what you have. I took such great care of that thing and loved it.
Of course you can learn these lessons without buying a car. But I think there can be a lot of good as long as your son takes good care of it! Best of luck to you and your son and happy (almost) father's day!

Happy Father's Day OP!
I hope your son safely enjoys the car; passing the love of cars to your son's the real gift IMO!

I have to agree that it all depends on knowing your son and if he will respect what has been given to him. I started with borrowing my parents Mazda MPV van, then learned to drive a manual Mazda B2000, then borrowed a Pontiac Gran Prix until I had my very first car of my own, 1965 Nova SS. Mind you it was a barn find in really rough shape but my dad and I torn the car apart completely and rebuilt it. The amount I learned was priceless and I can't even think about how much money I've saved from having the mechanical knowledge to fix things on my own. My parents were plenty wealthy enough to have bought me a new car but I have to say I'm thankful they helped me a little but also made me earn it.
To the OP, hope you and your son can do some wrenching together, it's a lost skill with kids these days but one I think is extremely valuable. |

Congrats!
We did not allow our only daughter to get her license until she was 18 to avoid the extra requirements and added a couple more years of maturity to her. But as soon as she was ready. She passed her written and practical test just one time and she is all over L.A area now and a very safe driver. We were not going to get her a car yet but seeing her being very responsible and instead of opting to travel to Japan for graduation she wanted and got the Mini Cooper S. At first we were worried of how it might be an unsafe car because of its size but she really likes how it is so easy for her to maneuver it around fitting her like a glove. Now she is parking backing up in our driveway with ease. No worries as far as being spoiled. Though she is our only child like I said very responsible and down to earth. Graduated with two A/A degrees along her H.S Diploma. Saved $10k on her own since childhood and now works part time for a BMW dealership as a receptionist for her first job and looking forward to college life after summer. It's funny how we rented a Q5 for her prom night along with four of her friends and she totally did not like it and how the steering was super light. I guess everyone really has different tastes. Again congrats to your family and to your boy and keep driving safe out there. |

Congrats to your son!
And for the rest of you whiny babies, most of the teenagers in the world won't even have a chance of owning a car period like we do. |
